Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” John 13:8
Fr. Peter Georgis celebrated Holy Mass, in commemoration of our Lord’s Last Supper, at Saint Matthew Catholic Church on March 24th, 2016. As our Lord Jesus Christ at Last Supper did for His Disciples over 2000 years ago and commanded them to do the same for others, Fr. Peter following our Lord’s commandment, washed the feet of 12 members of our Parish once again.
Fr. Peter explained in his sermon the meaning of this act of love and humility that is practiced in Catholic Parishes to this day. He also reminded us of the true meaning of Christianity, to not only preach the good news, but to also apply them in our lives.
Following the Mass the Eucharist was carried out of the sanctuary in solemn procession and placed into a specially prepared Tabernacle where it will remain until Saturday of Light, Easter Eve. This reminds us of the suffering endured by our Lord as He was taken to be crucified and died for us to be saved. The faithful had a chance to spend extra time by the Eucharist in Adoration.
Moving the Eucharist out of the Church makes the Church truly empty; all the Crosses and Icons are covered in black cloths; the Church is bare and in mourning, and will remain so till Easter Eve when we will celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection and rejoice once again.
