If our Lord can make of bread his holy Body,
How much can he make of people?
Bread, his Flesh; in man, his Spirit:
He pours out his love as on Passover Thursday.
On a Thursday, Jesus took the bread and blessed it;
so he takes man from his household.
Bread is blessed, man consecrated:
One the Offering, one to priesthood, both of Jesus.
Body sanctified and broken as on Friday;
so the priest is struck for truth’s sake.
Christ and priest together offered:
Holy One and sinful man are both accepted.
Eucharist goes into hearts as an entombment;
so the priest’s words also enter.
Eucharist and preaching quicken
living temples of our God: hearts of the faithful.
In the tabernacle, God dwells in his temple;
so he dwells in all the faithful.
Both in church and heart, the altar:
God comes both to church and heart by means of priesthood.
