Consecration of Oils

On Holy Thursday, April 17, 2014, His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo performed the rite of the Consecration of Oils. This ceremony is only done once every three years where the oils used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Annointing of the Sick. The Bishop invited all the clergy in San Diego, including the Seminarians of Mar Abba and the religious sisters, Daughters of Mary Immaculate Conception and the Workers of the Vineyard. All who were present gathered around the altar to witness the consecration.

During his homily, His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo spoke of the unity each diocese has under its Bishop. No priest may administer oils of their own. All oils must be received from the Bishop of their diocese. In this way, the Bishop who is the Shepherd of the Diocese in the image of Christ, reaches his flock through the oils used in the sacraments.
