His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, celebrated Mass on the First Sunday of the Crowning of the Church on November 3, 2013 at St. Mary’s Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Church in San Jose. The youth who were on The Resurrection Retreat that same weekend eneded the retreat by attending Mass at St. Mary’s as well. The church was packed with parishoners and youth, making this First Sunday of the Crowning an especially beautiful one.
After the Mass, there was a reception in the hall for Mar Sarhad, the youth who attended the retreat as well as the parishoners. A special thanks to all of the dedicated volunteers who put the reception together and made everyone feel so welcome.
The Crowning of the Church is the final Liturgical Season in the Chaldean Calendar. It is called the Crowning as it “crowns” the previous seven seasons. It is a total of four weeks, always occuring the four weeks before beginning a new Liturgical year with Advent (Subara).
O Lord, behold your Church, saved by your cross, and your flock bought with your precious Blood, offers a crown of thanksgiving in faith to you, O High Priest of justice who has exalted her by your abasement. (Basilica Hymn – First Crowning)
