St. Peter Cathedral celebrated the Feast of the Cross on Thursday, September 13, 2012. The Mass was celebrated by His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo. During his homily, Mar Sarhad spoke of how the cross of Christ is the Tree of Life that stood in the Garden of Eden. He went on to explain that the wood of the cross is also Our Lady, who bore the fruit of life for the world. The special honor given to Our Lady in the celebrations today was crowned with the opening of the new grotto at St. Peter Cathedral.

During his homily, Mar Sarhad announced the presentation Mary Mother of the Chaldeans Grotto which took place after the Mass. The candle lit procession began at the Church and ended at the Grotto where the Bishop blessed the image and consecrated the place as holy ground. The St. Peter Chaldean Choir and the Shamashe and Shamashyatha sang hymns to Our Lady during the blessing of the icon and as the crowd came to visit the spot.

The Feast of the Cross is a celebration in remembrance of when St. Helen found the Cross of Christ in the 4th Century. It is also known as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.
