First Communion Celebration 2006
The gates of Heaven opened on the night of Friday, June 9th, and morning of Saturday the 10th at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic
Cathedral as the Church gathered to celebrate the first Holy Communions
of several of our young people who have been preparing for the
occasion since the fall of last year. The children spent nine months preparing in Saturday Catechism classes, learning stories from the Bible, good morals, and a variety of songs in English, Arabic, and Chaldean. They mastered a vast array of materials that show how much hard work each one of them put in to their longed for Communion day.
His Excellency Bishop
Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo celebrated the Divine Liturgy on both days, and the seats of St. Peter’s Cathedral were occupied with proud parents and relatives. Beautiful white gowns and stunning black suits worn by the children filled the Cathedral. The
children participated and provided several prayers during the liturgy. The Bishop tested their knowledge by asking various questions about the Bible and the teachings of Christ, and the children answered with confidence and wisdom they had gained.
The children were full of smiles as they received Holy Eucharist for the first time, and continued with large smiles until the procession was over. Families celebrated outside with cheers and hoorahs, and the children as well as all who noticed the joyous ceremony left with a newfound love in their hearts. On Friday, the number of communicants was
51 total, 28 boys and 23 girls. On Saturday, the total number
was 71, 38 boys and 33 girls.
