Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina has been said to be one of the most powerful hurricanes to have hit the northern Gulf Coast in a half century. The storm came ashore Monday morning just east of New Orleans. Winds topping 140 mph transformed street signs, tree branches and roof debris into projectiles. The tropical storm left severe damages and several thousands are left without homes, food, money or work. There have been over 50 reported deaths, and the number is expected to continue increasing. New Orleans and cities throughout Mississippi are still more than 20 feet flooded and irreparable damages have left the cities in ruins.

The latest damage estimates by insurance industry analysts project that total insured damage from Hurricane Katrina could be between $10 billion and $25 billion dollars. Several relief programs and groups have come together to assist and help the victims of this natural disaster. Food trucks, relief packages, and large arenas have opened to give the survivors a place to settle for the next few months, but most people are left without any of their possessions. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those and their families affected by the hurricane, to all those struggling to barely survive.
