Mother Teresa's Birthday Remembered

CALCUTTA, Italy, AUG. 28, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Members of the Missionaries of Charity celebrated what would have been the 96th birthday of their founder, Blessed Mother Teresa.

The interreligious event on Saturday was led by the superior general of the missionaries, Sister Nirmala Joshi, who asked the participants to shun violence and work for peace and love, reported the Indian Catholic News Service of the Indian episcopate.

"Mother Teresa was a simple person of love, peace and Godliness. She was the gift of God from heaven to earth," said Sister Nirmala.

Stressing that "the power of love can conquer everything," Sister Nirmala pointed out that Mother Teresa showed that love can overcome evil.

The memorial of Mother Teresa's death will be celebrated Sept. 5.
