Rising with the Lord

A true Christian must know how to rise with his Lord. Resurrection is not a metaphor, but the substance of Christianity. Physical death and mortal sin are not a metaphor but a well proven reality; therefore, a true religion has to deal efficiently with the challenges they both pose to the fulfillment of the human being. Even Judaism --with the true revelation that it contains-- did not treat adequately the human need for salvation, but paved the way for it, preparing for its completion.

Christianity sees the human sin not only in its personal and individual condition but also in its comprehensive and global implications. Longtime before, Judaism, in its prophetic expressions as well as in the Law of Moses, dealt with the global "sins of people" and offered daily and seasonal prayers and sacrifices as expiation and atonement. But the sacrifice of an animal cannot exceed its limitations of meaning and value. The whole meaning of Passover remains confined to a liberation of one people, Israel , from the Egyptian servitude. What about the totality of human race? What about the whole of human misery? Where, how, and who is its Passover?

The Gospel, indeed, speaks of the "sin of the world" and how the Lamb of God takes it away, and speaks also frequently about "the resurrection and eternal life". Two events are the historic reference for the resolution of the human perennial problem of existence, as presented in the fact of death, physical and moral: the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection, indicated respectably by their visible signs: the cross on Golgotha , and the empty tomb.

Only Him, who is the Son of God and himself the Son of Man, could offer himself to his Father as an offering of love and expiation for the entirety of the human race; only Him, as well, could rise from the dead, not symbolically but ontologically, securing victory for the whole human race. His disciples, men and women, witnessed to the events of his crucifixion and resurrection, testified, and accepted martyrdom for their testimony, so that all of us would believe.

The Resurrection of Jesus the Lord, though it is an event that occurred only once in human history, it remains for all the creation, particularly for every believer, the source of inexorable energy. The Spirit of the Risen Lord will certainly guide, sustain, and comfort the Church until the end of times. The faithful, including their leadership, will remain, through all the course of their earthly journey, fragile mortals, nevertheless, having received in their hearts the Spirit of the Risen Lord, they are granted solid promise to participate, with their First-born Brother, in the overcoming of sin and death.

Chaldeans and Assyrians, together with all the Christian faithful, especially those of Iraq, are invited to celebrate Easter, not only as a liturgical solemnity, but, as well, as the divine fountain of grace and energy, therefore receiving forgiveness from the Lord's passion, and courage and determination from his triumphant Resurrection.
