His
holiness Pope Benedict XVI has established a Chaldean
Eparchy of Oceania named “St. Thomas the Apostle of Sydney
for Chaldeans” and appointed his Excellency Bishop Gabriel
Kassab as the first Bishop for the new eparchy, transferring
him from the seat of Basrah and keeping the title of
Archbishop as a “personal title”.

Kassab:

Born
in Telkeppe, August 4, 1938 in the Archdiocese of Mosul,
Iraq.
·
Completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the
Chaldean Patriarchal seminary in Mosul.
·
Ordained a priest in Baghdad on January 19, 1961.
·
Taught philosophy in the Patriarchal Seminary in Baghdad
until 1966 where he also served as Treasurer of the
seminary.
·
In
1966 he was entrusted with serving Sacred Heart Chaldean
Parish in Baghdad as pastor, where he worked unceasingly and
with great zeal and dedication until his election as
Archbishop of Basrah.

On
October 24, 1995 he received the papal approval and on May
5, 1996 he was ordained Bishop.
