Fountain Of Spirituality

Summarizing the bishop’s lecture:

In spite of the hot weather with triple digit temperatures in Los Angeles, the Chaldean Assyrian youth gathered together with cool attitudes and open hearts to greet each other, striving to enrich their faith with the fountain of spirituality that was flowing abundantly over the entire atmosphere of the convention.

This was the Second Chaldean     Assyrian Youth Convention for St. Peter Diocese in the Western USA, which was held on July 20-23, 2006 at St. Paul’s Assyrian Chaldean Catholic Church in North Hollywood, California.

His Excellency Bishop Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, celebrating his Fourth Anniversary of Ordination and Installation, lovingly greeted the youth and joined them in every activity, watching over them as the Shepherd leads his flock.

“A bishop’s main function is to unify people of faith. One manifestation of that unity is your own presence here,” said Mar Sarhad Yawsip as he opened his speech on Friday July 21st, 2006. He then referred to the topic of his lecture to the youth: “One of the most exciting ventures of young people is to hunt for a treasure. But a person needs a map with directions to find that treasure. I looked all over for that map and directions…” Then, extending his arms towards the audience, “… I discovered a hidden map in each one of my people.”

“Being from Mesopotamia, that was the first line of the map; 4000 B.C., for the first time in human history, the people of that land invented a method to write; they also invented a way to run: the wheel. For the first time, humans made themselves aware of their existence, and so now we have a record of our history and achievements.” Showing slides as illustrations to his lecture, Mar Sarhad Yawsip, pointing to the picture of the “ziq-qurta”, he explained: It derives from the verb zqara, which means to make a design that takes us up high. It was the fundamental attitude of the inhabitants of that land. The people, indeed, had an ambition to reach the heavens. What a contrast! In terms of human prosperity, that land of paradise and ambition has become a land of misery today. As a matter of fact,” Bishop Jammo said smiling at the young generation of Chaldeans and Assyrians gathered under one faith, “I came to America, and I am an American, but being of Mesopotamian origin is a distinct privilege.”

“The second element of the map is the language. I speak, Aramaic; this language has been in use for 3000 years without interruption. It is Jesus’ language, and how he spoke on the cross. You and I need no translation to understand his genuine words. What a bonus it is when I understand Jesus without translation. The Angel, when visiting Mary, spoke to her with Aramaic pronunciation, the same way we say to her: Mariam. English is the greatest international language at the present time, and we all speak it, but knowing Aramaic is a privileged bonus.”

“Being a Christian and belonging to the Catholic Church of the East is the third direction toward the treasure, because our Church preserves faithfully the Scriptural and liturgical traditions of original Christianity. The Eucharistic liturgy of our Church is indeed the only continuous contact with the texts of apostolic times.

“In Genesis 11:12, the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Go from Ur of Chaldea…’ Only one man was chosen from that land to become the Patriarch of believers.  You and I are related in blood, culture, and faith, to that family from whom Christ was born. Therefore, in your Church, you will find Christ, and taste him with a special ability.”

On Sunday, July 23rd, 2006, Mar Sarhad Yawsip celebrated the Divine Liturgy as a closing ceremony and, relating to his previous lecture, commented: “we come to an end of our search for the treasure; the treasure is the Lord Himself. Where can we find Him? The ordinary, secure way is the Church. As we profess in the last section of the creed: We believe in… one Catholic and Apostolic Church, since it is the Church who witnessed to the Lord, and to his resurrection, the Church is the one who presented Jesus to the World by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Special Thanks to St. Paul Parish

Everyone who participated in the 2006 Youth Convention agreed that St. Paul’s Parish did a great job. Fr. Noel Georges was a true leader and organizer of the event. He watched over everyone and everything superbly.

At any point during the convention, Fr. Noel was watching over you. St. Paul Parish members also did a wonderful job. The technical organizers, Ashur and Sargon as well as the group leaders, Audisho and Melissa dedicated their time and energy to this event. No one will forget the wonderful volunteers, both men and women, led  by Azhar, of St. Paul Parish that worked day and night throughout the convention to keep matters running smoothly.

Youth   In  Faith  +  +  +  +  +  +

The youth started their day every morning with a prayer called  Sapra. Bishop Sarhad Yawsip led the prayer along with father Noel and the priests from the other parishes. Then the youth recited prayers from the book of Psalms following the introductions read by Steven Anderson and Shantal from St. Paul’s parish. Here is the  opening part of the morning prayers in Chaldean and English.

Lectures & Meditations

His Excellency, Bishop Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, gave a speech to the youth on Saturday, July 21, 2006 (a brief summary of his lecture is on the first page of this newsletter).

Fr. Jon Jensen-Rieser also talked to the youth on that day.  He was called to give a speech because of his work with the youth. “We must incorporate faith into our daily life. Big decisions in life come because of small decisions as we walk through life. Christ has no body on earth, no hands, no feet, but yours. He came on earth and taught us and left us his body and blood. You are his body and blood,’  as he pointed to the youth. “Christ is inviting you, he is touching your hearts.”

Then there was music with catholic references and quotes from the Bible by Joe Sikorra and his band. To learn more about him, visit his website at: www.joesikorra.com
