The Patriarch of Babylon and the Pope of Rome

In the New Testament, no one of the Apostles is called a Patriarch or a Pope; both terms, basically meaning prominent ecclesiastic fatherhood, are the historically adopted titles for the head of major sees of ancient Christianity with Apostolic succession. In the context of this article, the Pope is the title of the Bishop of Rome, the terminal see of the head of the Apostles, Peter, while the Patriarchate of Babylon is the see of Thomas and Addai & Mari--the Apostles to the East of the Euphrates--and the administrative headquarters of the Church of the East. Peter is consistently positioned in the Gospels as the head of the list of the Twelve; his ordinary title in all the historic documentation of the Church of the East, liturgical and otherwise, is “Resha daShlyhe,” i.e. “Head of the Apostles.” What this “Reshanutha” or “Headship” means for the rest of the Apostles and for their successors should be understood from the explanation of the New Testament, and from observing how the Church universal exercised this ecclesiastic relationship, especially during the first millennium.

Through all of her documented history, the Church of the East wanted always to be an incorporation of the Church catholic and an integral part of it in faith, liturgy, and discipline. Her Profession of Faith repeats in every liturgical solemnity that “we believe…in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.” Nowhere is found any claim that the Church of the East was, or is to be, a Church closed in on itself or independent, in the formulation and development of her faith, sacramental liturgy or discipline.

The dialectic of communion: This fundamental doctrine resounds through the centuries in the rich patrimony of this apostolic Church. Nevertheless, historical circumstances made its implementation complicated and somehow tangled. One of the most remarkable landmarks of this issue occurred when the Church of the East, breaking with her well-recognized past of organized unity with the “western Fathers,” declared in the Synod of Mar Dadysho’, in 428 AD, that her Patriarch became her ultimate authority, not to be considered subordinated to any ecclesiastic hierarch or to be judged by any tribunal of the Church.  

Knowing the historic circumstances, we understand the delicate situation in which the Church of the East found herself within the Persian Empire, confronting inside of it the Zoroastrian religion, most of all facing a political and military enemy to the Roman West who patronized Christianity and endorsed its hierarchs. In the Persia of the fourth-sixth century, ecclesial dependence to the Christian West would have implied disloyalty in the eyes of the pagan State. Therefore, it was an emergency situation that imposed an emergency solution.  

Otherwise, no Synod of a particular church has competence or authority to change the constitution or the hierarchal order as desired by the Lord for his Church; neither is any particular church entitled to “declare independence,” isolating itself from the full and organic communion that the Lord wanted for his disciples and faithful. The Chaldean Catholic Church, the major extant remnant of the Church of the East, faithful to her Lord and to her apostolic patrimony, while preserving her self-governance, identity, and all the riches of her particular tradition, enjoys indeed the grace of full communion desired by the Lord as he prayed: “that all of them may be one.”(John 17:21)

Members of St. Paul's Assyrian Chaldean Catholic Church in North Hollywood and St. Mary's Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East in Encino along with numerous Assyrian organizations demonstrate in front of the federal building in Westwood, CA, on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 protesting the persecution, killing, raping and ethnic cleansing of Christians in Iraq who's government is ignoring their plead to protect them against violence on daily basis.

The Christians (Assyrian- Chaldean) who were the original settlers of Babylon—now Iraq, are asking the U.S. government to step in and provide a solution for the problem that started after the U.S. helped Iraq build it's new government which currently fails protecting all of it's Christian population that's rapidly diminishing.

Updating Pastoral Assignments

On July 16th 2007, Bishop Jammo held a
dinner-meeting with his clergy of the San Diego area and Riverside in his residence; he discussed several
issues regarding the organization of clerical ministry and pastoral services. The meeting was attended by:
Fr. Sabri Kejbo, Fr. Michael Bazzi, Fr. Paulos Khammi, Fr. Felix Shabi, Fr. Awraha (from the Chaldean Monks) and Fr. Andrew Younan. The assignments were updated as follows:

1. Vicar General: The Bishop renewed the assignment of Fr. Sabri Kejbo as Eparchial “Vicar General” for his second term (of five years).

2. St. Peter’s Cathedral-El Cajon: Clergy Assigments:

a. Fr. Michael Bazzi – Rector of the Cathedral.

b. Fr. Paulos Khammi - Parochial Vicar (for Chaldean Liturgy & Pastoral services and Sodalities).

c. Fr. Andrew Younan – Parochial Vicar (for English Liturgy services and youth ministry).

3. Pastoral Work in Parishes and Missions:

     a. St. Michael’s Church -El Cajon:

Entrusting Fr. Andrew to start a weekly English Mass every Saturday at 6.30 P.M. instead of the current
Arabic Mass and holding the “Breath of Life” youth group meeting from now on at St. Michael’s Church Hall immediately after (previously held at St. Peter’s Cathedral).

     b. Fr. Felix is assigned at the Eparchial Chancery to:

Organize the Missions’ pastoral ministry.

Take care of matrimonial juridical needs.

     c. St. Barbara Mission – Las Vegas:

Renewal of Fr. Felix to administrate the Mission for one more year in collaboration with other priests and  the Mission’s Council.

D. “St. Joseph Chaldean Mission”— Poway area:

Appointing Fr. Felix to establish a new Mission in
Poway area in collaboration with Fr. Awraha to perform weekly liturgical and pastoral services for our Chaldean families there.

4. Media Center: new collaboration to perform more effectively:

a.  Fr. Felix: General Director

b.  Fr. Awraha: Vice president

c.  Fr. Andrew: English section

d.  Fr. Paulos: Chaldean and Arabic writings

5. Liturgical Books: the bishop brought out the issue of editing and translating the rites of all the seven
Sacraments and other liturgical rites, especially the prayers of Sapra and Ramsha. The assignments were distributed as follows:

a. Fr. Felix: Committee Chairman

b. Fr. Sabri, Fr. Paulos, & Fr. Andrew as Collaborators.

6. “Workers of the Vineyard” Convent:

The bishop gave Fr. Awraha the mandate to work –along with Fr. Andrew- with our new Eparchial
convent of consecrated women according to his
monastic experience. The main assignment given by the bishop to them is the religious education of young
people especially leading the catechism in St. Michael’s Church and other religious-education activities.

7. St. George Monastery:

     a. Work in the Monastery: Assigning Fr. Awraha to establish the monastic and spiritual life in St. George’s Monastery.

     b. Spiritual Retreats: for youth and other groups:

Organizing and preparing for the retreats, formulating rules to follow in the new Monastery by visitors.

اقامت اخوية الرحمة الالهية لكنيسة مار ميخا الكلدانية يومي السبت والاحد 28 و29 تموز 2007، معرضها السنوي السابع على قاعة الكنيسة في الكهون. كان المعرض هذه السنة من انجح المعارض التي اقامتها الاخوية حيث أقبل اليه الكثير من الزوار وأولهم سيادة المطران مار سرهد يوسپ جمو مشجّعاً جهود شباب الأخوية.      

لقد تم خلال المعرض سحب بطاقة اليانصيب التي كانت جائزتها تمثال لمريم العذراء. تتقدم الاخوية بالشكر الجزيل للأب صبري قجبو راعي الكنيسة على تعاونه ومساندته للأخوية، ولكل مَن ساهم في انجاح هذا المعرض ولجميع المشاركين والزائرين، والعاملين فيه

إيمان وصلاة ... المسبحة الوردية

اعداد: هناء زيا

        ان صلاة المسبحة الوردية في الحياة الروحية لها اهمية كبيرة، نظراً للنعم التي يحصل عليها كل من يتلوها بخشوع ... فالتأمل هو العنصر الجوهري في الوردية وبدونه تتحول الى جسد لا روح فيه، وتصبح تلاوتها اعادة آلية لبعض العبارات، مخالفة لوصية يسوع
(متى 6: 7) وعليه فأنه لا بد من تلاوة الوردية بهدوء وروية بغية التوصل الى التأمل في اسرار حياة يسوع من خلال قلب امه تلك التي كانت اقرب الناس اليه.

"العائلة التي تصلي هي العائلة التي تحيا" (الپاپا بيوس 12) - ان صلاة المسبحة قديمة العهد، كان الرهبان قديماً يرددون الصلوات باستعمال حبل معقود بـ 150 عقدة ... الى أن ظهرت السيدة العذراء للقديس عبد الاحد وشددت على هذه الصلاة واختارتها صلاةً إلهية  مَرضية لدى اللـه ومحبية اليها.

مثلاً القديس عبد الاحد عَمِلَ مع أب أخر على اغناء المسبحة بادخال الاسرار اليها، كما اوصته السيدة العذراء للتأمل بحياة يسوع وحياتها، وسمياها المسبحة "الوردية". فقُسمت الى ثلاثة أقسام وأضاف الپاپا يوحنا بولس 2 قسماً رابعاً (اسرار النور) اعلنه في الرسالة الپاپوية التي ظهرت في 16 تشرين1 2002 فأصبحت الاسرار هكذا: الفرح، النور، الحزن، والمجد. وكلٌ منها يحتوي على خمسة أبيات. في بداية كل بيت تتلى مرة ابانا الذي و10  مرات السلام عليك يا مريم.

تطلب السيدة العذراء مريم بالحاح تلاوة الوردية، وظهر هذا في معظم رسائلها من خلال ظهوراتها :

·        الى برناديت سوبيرو في لورد طالبة في احدى الظهورات تلاوة المسبحة مع الجماهير وكانت برناديت ترى السيدة العذراء تبتسم وبيدها مسبحة من ورد.

·        في فاطمة طلبت من الاولاد تلاوة مسبحتهم وعلّمتهم صلاة صغيرة يتلونها في نهاية كل بيت وهي: "يا يسوع المحبوب، أغفر لنا خطايانا، ونجّنا من نار جهنم، وخذ الى فردوسك كل النفوس، ولا سيما تلك التي هي بحاجة اعظم الى رحمتك آمين."

اذاً فلنُكثر من تلاوة هذه الصلاة الجميلة ولنُشجّع على ممارستها بين العائلات، والجماعات، والافراد.

إرسالية القديسة بربارة تحتفل بالتناول الاول لابنائها

احتفلت ارسالية القديسة بربارة الكلدانية في لاس فيگاس بالتناول الاول
لـ 14 صبيا وصبية، صباح يوم السبت 21 تموز 2007. ترأس الاحتفال راعي الابرشية مار سرهد يوسپ جمو الجزيل الاحترام.

ابتهج المؤمنون بحضور راعي ابرشيتهم لمشاركته افراحهم واحتفالاتهم الروحية. وهنأ سيادته اهالي المتناولين وشكر معلميهم (بسام ومي ابونا) على ما بذلاه من جهود طوال السنة في تحضير وتهذيب الاولاد ليلتقوا مع يسوع شخصيا وجها لوجه! كما وشكر سيادته اهالي لاس فيگاس الكلدان على دعمهم ومؤازرتهم لعمل مجلس الارسالية وخاصة في التبرع وجمع مبلغ 200 الف دولار، ما مكّن الابرشية من القيام بشراء ملك جديد سيكون نواة لكنيسة القديسة بربارة ومركزا روحيا وثقافيا واجتماعيا لجاليتنا الكلدانية في المدينة.

وتدل الاحصاءات الاخيرة على ان عدد العوائل في المدينة هو بازدياد اذ بلغ مؤخرا 150 عائلة، ما يبشر ببداية جيدة لانماء الحياة الروحية بين ابنائنا المنتشرين في بلاد المهجر. هذا وقد حضر اجتماعات مجلس الارسالية برفقة راعي الابرشية كل من الاب صبري قجبو النائب الاسقفي العام، والاب فيليكس الشابي مدبّر ارسالية القديسة بربارة، والسيد عزيز روزقي رئيس المجلس الاستشاري الابرشي. الف مبروك للمتناولين ولأهاليهم، وان شاء اللـه يوم افتتاح المركز الرعوي للأرسالية بمعونة الرب.

تحديث الواجبات الرعوية

في مساء 16 تموز 2007 ، التقى سيادة راعي ابرشيتنا مار سرهد يوسپ جمو الجزيل الاحترام في مقر اقامته البعض من كهنة الابرشية في سان دييگو ومحيطها في اجتماع عمل . وقد ناقش معهم عدة قضايا تخص تنظيم الخدمة الكهنوتية والمهام الرعوية. حضر الاجتماع كل من الاباء: صبري قجبو، ميخائيل بزي، بولس خمي، فيليكس الشابي، اوراها الراهب، واندرو يونان. وجرت التحديثات على النحو التالي:

1- النائب الأسقفي العام: جدّد سيادة المطران تعيين الأب صبري قجبو لمنصب "النائب الأسقفي العام" لفترة 5 سنوات اخرى.

2- كاتدرائية مار بطرس ـ في الكهون:

     أ- الاب ميخائيل بزي – راعي الكاتدرائية

     ب- الاب بولس خمي- معاون خورني (لما يتعلق بانواع الخِدم بالكلدانية والاخويات)

ج- الاب اندرو يونان- معاون خورني (للخدم بالانگليزية ونشاطات الشباب)

3- العمل الرعوي في الخورنات والارساليات:

أ- كنيسة مار ميخا النوهدري- في الكهون:

     توكيل الاب اندرو لبدء قداس اسبوعي بالانگليزية كل يوم سبت في 6.30 مساء عوضا عن قداس العربي الحالي، كما وتقرر عقد اجتماع تجمع الشباب "نسمة الحياة" من الان فصاعدا في قاعة كنيسة مار ميخا مباشرة بعد القداس.

ب- تعيين الاب فيليكس في الدائرة الابرشية من اجل:

     1- تنظيم العمل الرعوي في الارساليات

     2- متابعة القضايا القانونية للزواج ومقتضياتها

ج- ارسالية القديسة بربارة- في لاس فيگاس:

تجديد تعيين الاب فيليكس مدبرا لشؤون الارسالية لسنة اضافية وذلك بمعاونة كهنة اخرين بالاضافة الى مجلس الارسالية.

- ارسالية القديس يوسف- في منطقة ﭘاواي:

     تعيين الاب فيليكس لتاسيس ارسالية جديدة في منطقة ﭘاواي

بالتعاون مع الاب اوراها الراهب للقيام بالواجبات الليتورجية والرعوية اسبوعيا لعوائلنا الكلدانية المتواجدة هناك.

4- المركز الاعلامي: تشكيلة جديدة لعمل اكثر فاعلية:

     أ- الاب فيليكس – المشرف العام، ب- الاب اوراها – نائب المشرف العام، ج- الاب اندرو – مسؤول عن القسم الانكليزي، د- الاب بولس – مسؤول عن الكتابات بالكلدانية والعربية

5- الكتب الطقسية:

     طرح سيادته مسألة تعديل وترجمة طقوس الاسرار السبعة وسائر المراسيم الطقسية، وعلى وجه الخصوص صلاة الصبرا والرمشا. وقد وزعت الواجبات على النحو التالي:

     أ- الاب فيليكس رئيس اللجنة.

     ب- الاباء: صبري، بولس، اندرو: اعضاء اللجنة.

6- دير"فعلة الكرم":

     خَوّل سيادة المطران الاب اوراها الراهب العمل - جنباً الى جنب مع الاب اندرو – في ديرنا الابرشي الجديد للشابات المكرسات وذلك بسبب خبرته في الحياة الرهبانية. الواجب الرئيسي الذي سلمه سيادة راعي الابرشية للمكرسات هو الثقافة الدينية للشباب وعلى وجه الخصوص ادارة التعليم المسيحي في خورنة مار ميخا، مع نشاطات ثقافية اخرى.

7- دير مار گورگيس:

     أ- العمل في الدير: تعيين الاب اوراها لتأسيس الحياة  الرهبانية والروحية في دير مار گورگيس.

     ب- الرياضات الروحية، للشباب وباقي الزوار: التنظيم والتهييء للرياضات الروحية، وصياغة القوانين ليتم السير عليها في الدير الجديد من قبل الزوار.
