A Shepherd’s Dialogue with the Christchild

Shepherds! May I Come with You?

In this age of satellites, tele-viewing, and instantaneous reporting, I searched, on Christmas Eve, for the shepherds in the vicinity of Bethlehem. News reached me that they were called to go pay a visit to a new-born Child. Being myself a shepherd of sorts, I wished to catch this unique opportunity. I flew on the wings of light-speeding angels to the plains of Judea, and then, having found the shepherds, I asked their permission to join them, and we went together towards the promised Babe.

            In front of the scene of the manger and its occupants, we were overwhelmed by awe and beauty. The shepherds were totally absorbed by the dazzling spectacle and didn’t utter a word. As far as I was concerned, I felt that I had to speak up as I knelt. This is what I remember telling the Babe and his parents:

            “O Babe Prince! Though you may have thousands of angels reporting to you all that is happening in our world, I feel it is my duty, as a shepherd of your flock, to present an updated dialogue now that you are making your annual visit to our planet.

            I am puzzled to observe that you are, until this minute, dwelling in a manger, despite many gorgeous cathedrals and abbeys that would compete for the honor of hosting you. Is it because you want to be united with the millions of desolated or unwanted babes that crowd the caves of our cities and towns, among them many of our own people rendered without home and country?

            I see you so exposed and unprotected, relying on the care of humble and meek parents. But, O royal prince, in the jungles of this world, ferocity is the rule, and Herod is pursuing you everywhere! Nevertheless, you maintain your calm and your serene smile. Is it because you trust so much the bounty of the human heart, which should conquer evil and destructive pride, and want us to look at you and be confident?

            With all of this apparent misery, it is so obvious that you, and everybody around you, are so happy and fulfilled. What is your secret, O Babe? Is it because happiness is what the human heart gives to the world, not what the world gives to the human heart?  Is it because only a loving heart can be happy and radiate happiness that you preferred to receive us in a bare slum, so that no one would ever doubt that true princes, as we are, being made in your image, are those who make any dwelling a royal chamber?”

            Joseph looked at me, indicating the end of audience. In the course of earthly time, I had to leave. Though I had to comply, I wished the dialogue would go on through my journey.

The Diocese of St. Peter the Apostle for Chaldeans and Assyrians in the United States was truly blessed on Friday December 07, 2007, with hundreds of the faithful attending St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral to have Fr. Sabri Kejbo ordained as the Archdeacon, and Fr. Felix Shabi ordained as the Corbishop of the Diocese by His Excellency Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo in the presence of all the priests from all the parishes within the Diocese. Also present was His Excellency Mar Bawai Soro and four of his priests.

Prior to the priests’ ordination, Bishop Sarhad Yawsip blessed 18 Lectors (9 males);  Tarik Attar, John Bachoua, Simon Esshaki, Alen Glina, Andrew Hermiz, Fadi Jadan, Devon Jina, Ricky Kassab & Waleed Al Kas Stephan and (9 females); Diana Alkatib, Rhonda Alkatib, Madlain Arabo, Mande Betty, Mary Esshaki, Vian Khoury, Salwa Saliman, Reneta Talia & Hayat Bahoura, a total of 22 lectors. Then Mar Sarhad blessed 4 Sub-deacons; Jack Bazzi, Stephen Nissou, John Somo & Thair Tomika.

The ordination started at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Mar Sarhad who in his sermon spoke about the Virgin Mary in remembrance of the feast of the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 08.

All of the blessings are a grace from God in his provision for the Church, and those ordained are aware first and foremost of the duty and
responsibility they are taking on, and secondly of the honor of being chosen to serve Christ and his Church in this particular way.

One of the sub-deacons ordained was Stephen Nissou, 24. He would like to share his comments about the ordination:

 “December 7, 2007 was a very spiritual day for our Diocese. A beautiful ordination ceremony celebrated by our beloved Bishop. We have been truly blessed with his enthusiasm and zeal for the growth and courage of our faith. He pours his heart and soul into every aspect of every project, no matter how great the challenge may be, His faith carries him through every goal without looking back. He shakes the community with his determination to succeed in bringing Christian unity and encouragement to be involved within our church community.

 

The ordination brought all of us joy, happiness, and tears. It is not the joy of receiving an award or a gift, but rather, it is the joy that encourages all of us to live our lives with Christ at the center. When we really understand the joy that God brings to our lives through prayer and serving our Church and community, that is when we really harvest the spiritual fruit. I have always felt that no matter how much I serve my Lord and my community, there is always so much more to give. With God’s grace we need to show Christ's love to everyone around us.

 

This event was truly an amazing encounter with Christ. This is a new beginning that will help to initiate a challenge, duty and commitment to those newly ordained. The moment we start thanking, praising, and remembering Christ throughout our day is the moment we will all begin to strengthen our own spiritual relationship with God.  I hope that this ordination will help many understand what their vocation or call from God really is.  We are all called to serve God in a special way.  Being a young Catholic myself, it can be very difficult to live a good catholic life with all the media creating false images of true happiness.  There is no true happiness without God and we must always remember God throughout our daily life.

 

My ordination as sub-deacon was a great sacramental ceremony and it has truly been a blessing.  I really felt the Holy Spirit’s presence on that special day.  I have taught Catechism for many years but now with this new blessing I really feel is an official title to teach in Christ’s name, serve my community, and participate in the
liturgical services.  This is a beginning of a new vocation for me and I hope to make a greater difference in our
community.

 

On behalf of all the Lectors and Sub-deacons, I would like to sincerely thank our Bishop, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo for his passion for our community and our faith. I would also like to extend a thank you to all of the priests who worked so hard to teach us about our faith with a clear understanding of our original Chaldean liturgy.

This Christmas Season, the youth of our diocese was asked to comment on their thoughts about Christmas. There are many ways to glorify the Lord during this time of year, and the youth has proved this by their range of topics: thankfulness and appreciation for what they have, preparation for the coming of Our Lord during Advent, their favorite part of Christmas: Mass, the Christmas play, hymns, family gatherings, food, the simple “Merry Christmas” phrase, etc. Here is what they have to say...

 

My favorite part about Christmas is going to the Christmas Eve Mass. I love seeing the Church filled with people and listening to the choir sing Christmas songs. The thing I look forward to the most is waking up Christmas day and opening presents with my family, for it is truly a cherished moment.

During Christmas, I think about the person that I am and who I want to become; which is to follow God. It really is my favorite time of the year.

It is for all these daily blessings--the blessings we complain of--that I am thankful for.

This time of year I like to contemplate on the Birth of Christ.  This year I am especially focusing on each individual of the Holy family.  What I am especially trying to do this year is pray and learn about St. Joseph.  He is usually unnoticed, which is a shame because he is truly a model of what every man should be. I love spending time with family and friends and creating new memories that will last forever and Christmas Mass is pretty much the center of all of that.

المـداليـة  العـجائبـيـة  

بقلم: ابتسام مدالو

اشكر اللـه على هذه الفكرة التي اعطاني اياها لأكتب عن هذه المدالية التي هي فعلا عجائبية. حصلت عليها على شكل قلادة من احد كهنتنا في سان دييگو، وقد مرت فترة ولم اقرأ المنشور الذي يأتي مع القلادة ، ولكن ذات يوم وقعت عيناي عليه وبدأت في قراءته وبدأ يؤثر فيّ بشكل عجيب، وأود ان اوصل ما قرأته في هذا المنشور الى القراء الكرام ليشاركوني ما تعلمته عن هذه القلادة.

وصف المدالية من الجهة الامامية:  صورة مريم العذراء المحبول بها بلا دنس اصلي وهي ممدودة اليدين وفيها  شعاع يرمز الى النعم التي تمنحها لكل من يطلب عونها وعلى حافة المدالية عبارة (يا مريم المحبول بها بلا دنس، صلي لأجلنا) وتحت هذه العبارة توجد سنة الظهور1830.

وصف الجهة الخلفية من المدالية:  حرف (M) رمز للعذراء مريم (Marie) وفوق حرف (  M) الصليب يرمز لآلام المخلص يسوع وموته، وتحت هذين الرمزين قلبان وشعاع النار يخرج منهما وأنه كافٍ لأي شخص ان يفهم المعنى، القلبان يرمزان الى قلب يسوع وقلب العذراء المتحدين روحيا وان منفصلين جسديا. ويحيط بالحرف (M) والصليب بأثنا عشر كوكبا علامة 12 رسولا.

قصة ظهور هذه المدالية:  ظهرت مريم العذراء للأخت كاثرين لابور في كابيلا دير الام لبنان المحبة في باريس في تشرين الثاني عام 1830، ووصفت العذراء كأمرأة جميلة وكاملة في بهائها. ففي اول زيارة للعذراء قالت لها "تقدمي الى اقدام المذبح لأن النعم منها تنسكب".فتعلمت الاخت كاثرين كيفية الصلاة لأنها قالت (عندما اذهب الى الكابيلا اطرح نفسي امام الـله واقول يا رب ها انا امامك ان اعطيتني شيئا اكون فرحة وان لم تعطني اظل شاكرة لك ايضا لأني لا استحق شيئاً، واحسب الامي وافراحي واستمع اليك، اعّد لك اوجاعي وافراحي واسمع فيك (علمتنا الاخت كاثرين كيفية الصلاة القلبية والتي هي هنا امام المذبح وبأتحاد افكارنا وقلبنا مع اللـه) ومع مرّ السنين اصبحت المدالية معروفة عند الناس بمدالية المحبول بها بلا دنس اصلي (الميدالية العجائبية) وهي تعطي النعمة للشخص الذي يلبسها او الشخص الذي يعطيها للأخر بثقة كاملة.

حياة الطوباوية كاثرين: ولدت في فينلس ماوتترز في فرنسا وفي التاسعة من عمرها توفيت والدتها، فحضنت تمثال العذراء وقالت في تلك اللحظة "انت تكونين امي من الان وصاعدا" وبعد سنتين قضتها عند خالتها رجعت الى عائلتها مع خالتها التي كانت تهتم بهم. وفي الرابعة والعشرين من عمرها دخلت جماعة بنات المحبة للقديس فنسنت دي ﭙول في باريس وبدلت اسمها الى كاثرين (كان اسمها الاصلي زو لابوري)، خدمت الفقراء لمدة 46 سنة وطوبت من قبل الپاپا ﭙيوس 12 عام 1947.

الأكـاديميـة الكـلـدانيـة تقيـم امسـية موسـيقية غنائيـة

تألقت قاعة كاتدرائية مار بطرس الكلدانية في الكهون، كاليفورنيا، مساء الجمعة 30 نوفمبر2007 بحضور المئات من النساء والرجال والشباب للأستماع الى أنغام الموسيقى العذبة والغناء الشرقي الأصيل بقيادة عازف الكمان الموسيقار لؤي يوسف، وتوزيع الموسيقى بإشراف عازف الكيبورد والبيانو جوليان توما، بمشاركة جوقة خاصة من الشابات والشباب الكلدان في سان دييگو. بالاضافة الى حضور عدد من الكهنة الأفاضل. تشرف الحفل بحضور مؤسـس الأكاديمية الكلدانية عام 1980 ورئيسها سيادة المطران مار سرهد يوسپ جمو الجزيل الاحترام الذي تكلم بأختصار عن ما تقدمه هذه الاكاديمية من اعمال رائعة ومتميزة وليس في المجال الديني والكنسي فقط وانما اشار ان هناك حاجة الى التعبير عن التراث الاصيل، مع الحفاظ على الفولكلور الشعبي وتقديمه بشكل حديث وبفن رفيع يطرب الجمهور وينعشه ويجذبه الى الأستمتاع بحلاوته. تضمن البرنامج مقطوعات موسيقية واغاني انفرادية وجماعية باللغتين الكلدانية والعربية مما نالت اعجاب الحاضرين. هذا وتم في الأمسية نفسها اصدار المجموعة الاولى من هذا الانتاج الموسيقي الغنائي الرائع على CD بعنوان "باهار دلِبّا" الذي يعني ربيع القلب.

انتهاء الدورة التعليمية للمعهد الكلداني للدراسات النهرانية في سان دييگو

انتهت الدورة التعليمية للمعهد الكلداني للدراسات النهرائية في سان دييكو والتي استمرت من 3 اكتوبر ولغاية 28 نوفمبر 2007 حيث شارك في الدورة ما يقارب ال 70 طالباً وطالبة ومن مختلف الاعمار. هذا وقد امتحن ما يقارب 35 طالباً وطالبة في نهاية الدورة بالمواضيع التي شرحت لهم، كما و قدمت للناجحين شهادات لأكمالهم هذه الدورة الدراسية القيـّمة.

تنصيب غبطة أبينا البطريرك مار عمانوئيل الثالث دلي كاردينالا في رومـا

بمناسبة تنصيب غبطة ابينا البطريرك مار عمانوئيل الثالث دلي كاردينالاً من قبل قداسة الحبر الاعظم البابا بندكتوس 16 في روما سافر الاب صبري قجبو والاب يوشيا صنا مع عدد من المؤمنين من ابرشية مار بطرس الرسول للكلدان والاثوريين، ومن نواحي كاليفورنيا المتعددة، الى حاضرة الفاتيكان في روما لحضور وقائع مراسيم تنصيب راعي الكنيسة الكلدانية في العالم في 24 نوفمبر 2007 .

حقا كان لهذا الحدث صدى عظيم امام العالم كله، ان يتسلم  رجل كلداني عراقي هذا المنصب الرفيع الذي جمع ابناء العراق كلهم  بفرح اخوي  مهنئين غبطته وطالبين من الرب ان يعينه في اكمال رسالته، رسالة المحبة والسلام.

الأفتتاح الجديد لكنيسة مار گورگيس في اورنج كاونتي

احتفلت كنيسة مار گورگيس الكلدانية بمشاركة اعضاء رعيتها  في 18 نوفمبر2007، بالافتتاح الجديد للكنيسة بعد التعميرات التي حصلت عليها بالاخص في مذبح الكنيسة والقاعة. كان لحضور راعي ابرشيتنا مار سرهد يوسب جمّو الجزيل الاحترام دور فعال في جميع هذه التغييرات والتعميرات، فقد كان الموجه الاول لها، وحضر الاحتفال ايضا اعضاء من جمعية فرسان كولومبس وجمع غـفير من المؤمنين. وبعد الاحتفال بالقداس الالهي والزياح كانت هناك وجبة غـداء مشتركة قامت بتحضيرها لجنة المطبخ. نرفع صلواتنا الى الباري عـز وجل من اجل جميع العاملين في كرم الرب وكل من ساهم بالمساعدة، وخدمة كنيسة الرب وليبارك الرب الجميع.

فعاليات كنيسة مار اوراها الكلدانية في اريزونا

ما ان وصلت الدفعة الاولى من المهاجرين القادمين من تركية حتى تم تشكيل لجنة منبثقة من الكنيسة للاهتمام بمتطلبات الاخوة الجدد، وتم الاعلان في الكنيسة لمد يد العون لهؤلاء الاخوة وقد لبّ النداء بكل همة ونشاط ابناء الجالية الكرام  وتسابقوا في التبرعات العينية الضرورية كأدوات المطبخ بكل مستلزماته وكذلك متطلبات غرف النوم وغرف الاستقبال من الكراسي والقنفات واجهزة التلفاز والعاب الاطفال، وقام عدد من اطفالنا بالتبرع بالعابهم للاطفال الجدد.  كما نضمنا زيارات ميدانية لكل العوائل ونسقتا مع اصحاب المهن الحرة لتشغيلهم حتى يتمكنوا من مواكبة مسيرة الحياة وتباحثنا ايضا مع المنظمات لرعاية المهاجرين في نقلهم الى وحدات سكنية اكثر ملائمة وافضل صحةً وقد نجحنا في مسعانا هذا، وذهبنا  الى مدينة توسان مرتين للاطلاع على احوال العوائل الواصلة هناك لتقديم المساعدات لها واتصلنا بالمنظمات المسؤولة عنهم لنقلهم الينا، وأذا تطلب الامر سأذهب مرة في الشهر لاقامة القداديس لهم هناك.  اما عن عائلة المرحوم صباح يونان الذي وصل الى اريزونا مريضا بداء السرطان  وفارق الحياة في 30 تشرين الاول فقد تمت مراسيم دفنه بتجمع حاشد واعلنا في الكنيسة القيام بحملة التبرعات النقدية لتغطية نفقة الدفن المكلفة والحمد للـه وفقنا في مسعانا بهمة الغيارى واصحاب الشيمة والنخوة طالبين من الرب ان يبارك الخيرين بفيض نعمه آمين.

Nearly 600 Catechism students from preschool through 8^th grade, and about 100 volunteer teachers attended the Christmas celebration prepared for them at St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral on Saturday, December 15, 2007.

First, all the students gathered inside the church for prayers led by Fr. Michael Bazzi. Also hearing confessions was Msgr. Felix Shabi, followed by the Christmas play. Afterwards, everyone gathered at the church hall to have fun, enjoying the Christmas songs and music, the wonderful crafts and activities with the help of all the volunteer teachers and moms. The students also enjoyed pizza and drinks. The best part was when Santa joined the celebration giving out candy.
