Salvaging our Church and Culture

To a connoisseur of history of the Mesopotamian Church, of its native people and civil culture, the present time is the most drastic of all. The Persian protracted persecutions, the Moslem imposition of second-class status, the Mongolian tribulations, and the Ottoman massacres, could not eradicate from its ancestral land the Apostolic, proud, heroic, and the totally pacifist Church of the East. Nevertheless, our civilized world in the third millennium is witnessing, with indifference, how this is being done with flagrant success.

The United States government and the international institutions bear direct and specific responsibility toward the fate of the native Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians of Iraq, but that is not the subject of this article.  Rather, let us focus here in what is our own challenge and task, as a community, at this critical and defining moment:

First: It is incumbent on the Assyrians and Chaldeans, Apostolic and Catholic, to rediscover their belonging to the one historical Church of the East, therefore, to restore the actual fragmented segments of that Church of their forefathers to its primordial unity. The movement toward that unity entails the following process: a) the identification of the constitutive and continuously valid elements of its historic formation; b) a collective willingness to return to that common core as a foundational reference for a viable renaissance and organic growth.

Second: As tragic and drastic as the actual situation for Iraqi Christians is, they should not despair. Chaldeans and Assyrians must rise to the challenge, by: a) formulating a fair and dignified solution to survive and flourish in the ancestral land of Mesopotamia; b) provide refuge and solace to those forced to flee; c) establish solid and dynamic ecclesial and cultural institutions of common bond between all of them.

Third:  The faithfulness to full communion with the Petrine See of Rome is paramount for any successful plan of survival and renaissance. Being an integral member of the one ecclesial body of the Lord is the healthy position, in which ecclesial vitality and canonicity is communicated and shared. Rejecting that fullness of membership results unavoidably in a debilitating isolation and a damaging aberration.

Having outlined the abovementioned basic guidelines for the recovery of the desolated Christianity of Iraq, we consider it beneficial to share our thoughts with our community at large in order for them to interact for their implementation; as for ourselves, we take it as our call to fulfill them in the ministry of our diocese, being confident as well that this plan will have not only a healthy result for our ecclesial community, but also a serious impact on the chances of the survival and flourishing of our millennial culture.

Female Chaldean Judge

in the State of California

 

Polly Haisha Shamoon, 42, of El Cajon, is the first female Chaldean judge in the State of California.

   She was sworn in Wednesday, July 23^rd, 2008, and appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the San Diego County Superior Court.

   Before joining the San Diego Superior Court bench, Judge Shamoon served as a Deputy District Attorney with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office for more than 15 yrs.

   She earned a J.D. degree from the University Of San Diego School Of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the same university.

   St. Peter Catholic Diocese for Chaldeans & Assyrians-USA is very proud to congratulate the honorable Judge Polly Haisha Shamoon, daughter of Mr. & Mrs Najib and Najiba Haisha, parishioners of St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral - El Cajon, CA.

 

 

 أول سيدة كلدانية تصبح قاضية في ولاية كاليفورنيا

حصلت پـالي هـيشـا شـمعون على منصب "قاض" بعد قسَمها في 23 تموز 2008. وهي أول سيدة كلدانية (42 عاماً) تتقلد هذا المنصب في ولاية كاليفورنيا. عُـينت قاضية في المحكمة العليا لمقاطعة سان دييگو من قبل حاكم الولاية آرنولد شوارزنيگر.

   قبل انتمائها الى المحكمة العليا، عملت نائبةً للمدعي العام في دائرة المدعي العام في سان دييگو لأكثر من 15 عاماً.

حضرة القاضية پالي هـيـشـا شمعون هي ابنة نجيب ونجيبة هـيشـا. وهي زوجة السيد لؤي شـمعون ولهم 3 أطفال.

هذا وحضر مراسيم القسَم والاستقبال اضافة الى المسؤولين والموظفين عدد كبير من المدعوين يترأسهم سيادة المطران سرهد يوسپ جمو والأب ميخائيل بزي وهما فخوران بإبنتهم پالي لاستحقاقها هذا المنصب الرفيع الذي يرفع اسم الكلدان عالياً ويليق بأصالة تراثنا الكلداني العريق.

HISTORICAL CELEBRATION of  CHURCH UNITY  

“How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity ”  Psalm 133:1

A Three Day-Event (1-3 August 2008)

at Saint Mary’s Church in San Jose - Campbell, CA

Day One: The Clergy Council of Saint Peter Catholic Diocese for Chaldeans and Assyrians (the Northern Vicariate) met at Saint Mary’s Church. The meeting was presided by the Eparchial Bishop, His Grace Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, with the presence of Bishop Mar Bawai Soro and the local clergy: Father Kamal Bidawid, Chorbishop Samuel Dinkha, Father Youshia Sana, Father Noel Gorgis and Father Michael Barota.  Clergy members of this Vicariate who were not present were Father Tommy Tomika (Los Angeles) and Father Dimitri Grekoff (Sacramento).  Arrangements concerning the details of merger of the former San Jose Parish of the Assyrian Catholic Apostolic Diocese (ACAD) into Saint Peter Diocese and the incorporation of its clergy and faithful in Saint Mary’s Parish were finalized and sealed during this meeting.  Later on in the evening the Bishops and the Priests met with 70 individuals, members of the Laity Commission of Saint Peter Diocese along with the Deacons, Mutwa, Ladies, Youth and Religion Education Teachers of Saint Mary’s Church (from both services). Participants from Saint Thomas (Turlock) and Saint Matthew’s parishes (Ceres) were also present at this meeting, in which the details of the merger were clarified by Bishop Mar Sarhad Yawsip.

Day Two: H.G. Mar Sarhad Yawsip presided over a liturgical service held to celebrate this historic unity and the occasion of reception of Chorbishop Samuel Dinkha, the Deacons and the faithful of San Jose’s Parish (of ACAD) into Saint Mary’s Parish.  Present there were Bishop Mar Bawai and all the other clergy mentioned above.  Father Youshia Sana continues to serve Saint Mary’s Church as its Pastor and Chorbishop Samuel Dinkha as its new Associate Pastor. This day was filled with appreciation by the faithful, who proclaimed it “as a gift from God”.

After the Church service, members of the congregation along with nearly 350 of the faithful gathered for a dinner reception at Rosewater Hall. The joint choir of Saint Mary’s Parish chanted several wonderful hymns.

Day Three: H.G. Mar Sarhad Yawsip celebrated Qurbana (Holy Mass) at Saint Mary’s Church.  His Grace gave an inspiring homily about the meaning of the Gospel in which he encouraged all to take further steps to strengthen and promote the unity movement between all Assyrians and Chaldeans.

Hearing the Call of the Lord

The Dedication of the Seminary of Mar Abba the Great

      As the Lord calls us, it is our duty to answer, and his call is not only for our benefit but that of the whole Church. It was in this spirit that the Seminary of Mar Abba the Great was dedicated by Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo at 6 PM on the Sixth Anniversary of his
Installation as bishop of St. Peter Diocese, July 25, 2008.

      The five young seminarians, donning their cassocks for the first time on this day, heard a call to discern the priesthood, and they answered by presenting themselves to the bishop; the bishop, in turn, heard the call of the Lord to establish a seminary, the people of God, hearing the call of their bishop to support the fledgling seminary, responded with loving generosity.

      In all of these ways the Lord called us for two reasons: for the good of the Church, and for our own sanctification. When a young man follows a calling, the Church benefits and he is made holy at the same time; and when a bishop takes on such a hard task as a seminary and the people of God support with open hearts, the same results follow. This is why all who are involved in the seminary project, from the bishop to the seminarians to all the donors, feel a great honor and joy: because the spiritual benefit they gain is greater than any sacrifice they can make. Please pray for the seminarians as they begin this new journey, and for all those who support the seminary, that God’s grace be abundant in every step.

أهلاً ومرحباً بالأب بطرس في سان دييگو

الأب بطرس لورنس ولد في البصرة 1968. دخل معهد مار شمعون الصفا الكهنوتي 1983 وتخرج من كلية بابل الحبرية للفلسفة واللاهوت 1992.

التحق بالخدمة العسكرية وأمضى فيها سنتين. متزوج وله ولدان. كان مسؤولاً للتعليم المسيحي في كنيسة الصعود في بغداد.

رسمه سيادة المطران جبرائيل كساب في البصرة كاهناً في نيسان 1999. غادر البصرة 2005 بسبب الأوضاع الأمنية الى بغداد وخدم في كنائس الدورة بعض الوقت.

وصل الى أميركا قادماً من تركيا في تموز 2008، فأهلاً وسهلاً به في أبرشيتنا.

مقابلة مع الأنبا جبرائيل گورگيس توما الراهب

جاءنا زائرا من العراق في مطلع شهر آب حضرة الأنبا جبرائيل گورگيس توما الراهب، الرئيس العام للرهبانية الأنطونية الهرمزدية الكلدانية. وأثناء فترة اقامته في سان دييگو بدار الكاتدرائية ولقائه مع سيادة راعي الأبرشية مار سرهد يوسپ جمو الجزيل الاحترام، انتهز المركز الأعلامي الكلداني الفرصة وأجرى معه لقاءً شيقاً. رأينا ضروريا أن نسمع من رجل كنسي بمنصبه المهم والحساس وهو يعكس لنا من الآراء، والحقائق، والافكار، والتطلعات، والآمال... ما يختلج في اعماقه كي لا تبقى مطمورة او طي النسيان. زوروا موقعنا كلدايا.نت www.kaldaya.net   لقراءة هذه المقابلة الشيقة بكاملها.

لـقـاء الأبنـاء وأبيـهـم

في جو انتعش بالمحبة والفرح- في لقاء الأبناء وأبيهم- نظمت جوقة التراتيل الكلدانية لكاتدرائية مار بطرس الكلدانية في الكاهون- كاليفورنيا بقيادة الموسيقار وعازف الكمان لؤي يوسف، وعازف الكيبورد جوليان توما، لقاءً متواضعاً مع العشاء مساء الاربعاء 23 تموز 2008 على قاعة مار بطرس بمناسبة  الذكرى السادسة لتنصيب أبينا مار سرهد يوسپ جمو اسقفاًً على أبرشية مار بطرس. حال دخول راعي الأبرشية الى القاعة ارتسمت على وجهه مشاعر الفرح والمحبة الأبوية لالتقائه مع ابنائه من شابات وشباب الجوقة الذين حضّروا له برنامجا فنيا متواضعا رغم بساطته نال اعجاب سيادته وترك اثراً طيبا في قلبه لأنه يؤكد دائماً ان التراتيل الروحانية لا تكفي اذا لم ينسجم معها الفن الموسيقي الرفيع.

      كملت الفرحة بحضور الأب ميخائيل بزي راعي الكاتدرائية، والآباء بولس خمي، وأندرو يونان، والأب بطرس، وبحضور الاخوات راهبات الكلدان،  وعدد من الشمامسة مع عوائلهم، واعضاء من اخوية فرسان كولومبس وبعض اعضاء مجلس الخورنة. تخلل البرنامج تراتيلا والحانا كنسية وكلمات واشعار بالمناسبة شارك بالقائها عدد من الشمامسة الافاضل. تبعها عرض فني مصور عن اهم المنجزات التي حققها راعي الابرشية خلال السنوات الست الماضية. ثم قام شباب وشابات الجوقة بعرضٍ تمثيليٍٍ مأخوذٍ من الفصل 20 من  أنجيل متى. (مثل العمال في الكرم). واختتم اللقاء بترتيلة الراعي الصالح.

شاول - بولس رسول الشعوب

الأب ميـخائيـل بـزي

لقد صُلبتُ مع المسيح فما انا أحيا بعد ذلك، بل المسيح يحيا فيّ. واذا كانت لي حياة بشرية، فإنها في الايمان بابن اللـه الذي احبني وضحّى بنفسه من اجلي“ (غلاطية 20:2).

هذه الكلمات فاه بها شخص لم ينتسب الى المسيح فقط كما هو حال بعض المسيحيين، بل عاش حياة المسيح حيث بعد ان اكتشف يسوع حدث انقلاب جذري في اعماق وجوده حتى صرح في "كل رُبح عَدَدتُه خُسرانا من اجل المسيح، بل أعد كل شيء خسراناً من اجل الربح الاعظم ألا وهو معرفة ربي يسوع المسيح. من اجله خسرتُ كل شيء وعددتُ كل شيء نفاية لأربح المسيح" (فيليبي 3: 7-8).

من هو الذي صرح بهذه الكلمات الخالدة التي تنبع من اعماق قلب مخلص. وما احوجنا نحن اليها لكي نطبعها في أذهاننا ونعيش للمسيح. انه شاول بولس رسول الشعوب.

ابتداءً من 29 حزيران 2008 كرّست الكنيسة عاماً لاسم مار بولس. ولنتعرف إليه من كتب العهد الجديد. جاء ذكره لأول مرة في كتاب الأعمال 59:7، دفع اليهود مار اسطيفانوس خارج اورشليم وأخذوا يرجمونه، اما الشهود فخلعوا ثيابهم عند قدمي شاب يُدعى شاول.

منذ ان سمع شاول وهو يرجم اسطيفانوس كلمات الشهيد الاخيرة "يارب لا تحسب عليهم هذه الخطيئة" رمحٌ حزّ في قلبه ولأول مرة أحسّ كم هي المسيحية رائعة إذ المقتول يصلي ويغفر لقاتليه.

وفي الفصل الثامن من الأعمال يحكي لوقا عن شاول قائلاً: ”كان يفسد في الكنيسة ويذهب من بيت الى بيت فيُخرج الرجال والنساء ويُلقيهم في السجن“ (أعمال 3:8).

ويباشر الفصل التاسع من الأعمال عن شاول قائلاً: أما شاول فما زال ينفث تهديداً وتقتيلاً لتلاميذ الرب.كتب عن شاول بولس المؤرخون واللاهوتيون مجلدات ولازال المسيحيون يستقون من ينابيع تعاليمه.

واليكم جدولا مفيدا يمكن لكل واحد منا خلال هذه السنة المخصصة على اسم مار بولس، ان يتتبع خطوة فخطوة حياة مار بولس ويستقي المعلومات من 14 كتابا من العهد الجديد اي كتاب اعمال الرسل و13 رسالة منسوبة الى مار بولس:

1- شاول اليهودي: أعمال: 7 و 8.

2- شاول المسيحي أعمال: 9.

3- شاول بولس: الرّحالة من اجل المسيح، اعمال: 13-21.

4-مار بولس: سجين في أورشليم وقيصرية، اعمال:21-26

5- مار بولس أسير وسجين في روما، اعمال: 27-28.

ان كتاب اعمال الرسل يضم 28 فصلاً، الفصول 1-12 تضم اعمال مار بطرس وبعض الرسل ونشأة الكنيسة، والفصول 13-28 مخصصة لاعمال مار بولس. في سفر اعمال الرسل  تحَدّثَ مار بولس مرتين عن نفسه، مرة في اورشليم (اعمال 22) ومرة اخرى  في حضرة الحاكم أغريبا (اعمال 26).

من هذين الفصلين نتعلم بأن بولس ولد من أبوين يهوديين في مدينة طرسوس في تركيا نحو 5 ميلادية، درس العهد القديم وتمرّس به واصبح فريسيا متعصباً. بعد قيامة المسيح جاء الى اورشليم واضطهد المسيحيين. وهو في طريقه الى دمشق تراءى له يسوع، ولما سأله شاول: ”من انت يارب؟“ قال له يسوع: ”أنا الذي تضطهده“. بقي اعمى 3 ايام وفي دمشق عمذه حننيا الكاهن. ثم ذهب الى ديار العرب مملكة الانباط قرب دمشق (غلاطية 17:1-19) ثم عاد الى دمشق وبعد ثلاث سنوات صعد الى اورشليم وزار مار بطرس ثم يعقوب اخي الرب ورجع الى طرسوس. ثم جاء الى انطاكيا في سورية وبدأ مع برنابا رحلته الاولى بين 45-48م (أعمال 14،13) وهناك أسس سبع كنائس.

ثم رجع وحضر مجمع اورشليم عام 49 م (أعمال 15) وحالاً بدأ سفرته الثانية مع سيلا وطيمثاوس ولوقا بين 49-52م  (أعمال 15-18). ثم رجع وبعد فترة وجيزة بدأ سفرته الثالثة مع لوقا  و7 رفاق بين 53-58م (أعمال 18-21). في هذه السفرات الثلاث فتح بولس آفاقاً جديدة للمسيحية حيث اهدى اليهود والوثنيين في تركيا واليونان. وبين 58-60م اُسِر مرتين في اورشليم والقيصرية ثم أُخذ أسيراً الى روما وبقي سجيناً في روما من 61-63م لمدة سنتين والتاريخ غامض عن حياته بعد اخلاء سبيله في روما. الا ان التقليد يذكر عنه بأن القيصر نيرون أمر بقطع رأسه واستشهد في روما عام 68م. من الجدير بالذكر أن هذا البطل الذي لم تنجب مثله الكنيسة الى الآن كان ينتقل من بلد الى بلد ويبشر في المجامع. منذ عام 49م. بدأ يكتب الرسائل لأولئك الذين لم يكن بوسعه الوصول اليهم وهكذا اغنى الكنيسة بكنز تعتز به المسيحية حيث في 13 رسالة منسوبة اليه تطرّق الى معظم ما في اللاهوت العقائدي والأدبي والليتورجي للكنيسة.

ما أحرانا ان نتمثل بهذا الرجل العظيم فنجعل المسيح شخصاً يعيش فينا ونحيا معه ونعكس في حياتنا اليومية أفعاله وتعاليمه. ونصرخ مع رسول الامم وننشد نشيد الظفر قائلين:

”ان كان اللـه معنا فمن يقدر ان يقاومنا..... من يفصلنا عن محبة المسيح؟ اشدة ام ضيق ام اضطهاد ام جوع أم عريُ ام خطر ام سيف..... وأني واثق بأنه لا الموت ولا الحياة، ولا الملائكة ولا رؤساء الملائكة، ولا الحاضر ولا المستقبل، ولا اصحاب القدرة العلوية ولا السفلية ولا خليقة اخرى، ولا شيء بوسعه ان يفصلنا عن محبة اللـه لنا في ربنا يسوع المسيح“ (رومية 21:8-29) .

هذا وأقامت الجمعية امسية شاي مع العشاء والموسيقى في 30 تموز على حدائق دار السامري الصالح لراهبات الكلدان. كان ضيف الامسية طبيب متخصص بأمراض القلب، شرح طرق الوقاية خاصة عند النساء حيث أوفانا بمعلومات قيمة عن الموضوع.
