Our Calling to Sainthood
Bishop Bawai Soro

OUR HEARTS ARE RESTLESS

“I heard a voice from heaven say, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes,’ said the Spirit, ‘let them find rest from their labors, for their works accompany them.’” (Revelation 14:13)

Saint Augustine, bishop of Hippo in the fifth century, in the beginning of his great work The Confessions, puts his finger precisely on what it is about human life that drives and motivates us: we are restless. Augustine saw that energy and drive in the human spirit as coming from God and tending toward union with him when he wrote his prayer to the Lord, “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” God is the origin and the goal of all human existence.

The human vocation, plain and simple, is to respond to the call to holiness we have received. Through the ministry of the Church, God provides us with his grace, mercy, forgiveness, and every help necessary so that we may respond fully to his call. Since we have our origin in God and the end or goal of our existence is found only in him, the purpose of human life is to become saints. Our goal is to see God face to face.

Saints, or the blessed, are those to whom Jesus referred in the Sermon on the Mount, when he talked about the poor in spirit, the meek, peacemakers, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful and pure in heart. By saying “yes” to God’s call to holiness, they allow the mystery of Christ and the Cross to become fully actualized in their lives.

In our common usage we use the word saints to refer to those people who have died and now live with God. By their faithfulness to God’s call, by their works of charity and love, and by their cooperation with God’s grace, they have allowed the mystery of salvation to come to completion in their lives. They have shared in the suffering of Christ on the Cross, and the same Jesus who said to the good thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43) has flung wide the doors of paradise to them also.

Salvation is not something earned. It is a free gift of God. Responding to the Lord’s grace, we are free to choose or reject that gift. By his penitence as he hung next to Jesus on Calvary, the good thief acknowledged his sinfulness, recognized Jesus’ lordship, and humbly begged to be remembered when Jesus entered into his reign. Repentance and conversion are a necessary part of the human response to the call to holiness. By turning away from sin and following in the Lord’s footsteps, we allow that mystery of salvation to work within us. This is how saints are made.

In Saint Paul’s letters the saints are often simply members of the Church. For him, the holy ones are synonymous with saints. “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are (in Ephesus) faithful in Christ Jesus,” is typical of his style. (Ephesians 1:1) Paul encouraged believers by reminding them that they were called by God, “before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.” (Ephesians 1:4) Thus, all of us, the baptized who are allowing God to work out our salvation in this life, are saints in this sense. At least, recognizing our sinfulness and need for conversion, we are saints in the making.

It is important to understand that God always makes the first move for us on our journey. Jesus calls us to “be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect,” (Matthew 5:48). The Father sent his only-begotten Son to teach us how to live, how to respond to his call. Jesus died on the Cross in our place, the blameless, spotless lamb sacrificed in place of the guilty. As he promised, the Holy Spirit came upon the infant Church, filling the apostles with the fire of God’s love so that they could fulfill the mission Jesus gave them. (Acts 2:3)

Jesus promised that fulfilling that mission would mean persecution for his followers. (Luke 6:21) The call to holiness means rejecting a worldly way of thinking and living in favor of responding fully to God’s plan. An eye for an eye becomes instead turning the other cheek. (Matthew 5:39) Giving in to every base human desire gives way to living in the Holy Spirit, becoming children of God. (Romans 8:12-14) Each sinner is called instead to holiness: to become a saint.

God accomplishes this marvelous work in us by being faithful to his promises. Through Baptism we receive the forgiveness of sin and become his friends. In Confirmation the Holy Spirit descends upon us as upon the apostles. At the Eucharist we hear God’s word and receive the sacrament of salvation, the body and blood of Christ. Thus fully initiated as members of the Church, we too can be instruments of salvation for others.

As members of the Church, we are members of the communion of the saints, which is the Church. We who here on earth are still cooperating with God in working out our salvation are united in Christ with those who have died and gone before us marked with the sign of faith. From their place in heaven, the saints of God help us by their prayers and intercession. We are not left alone to answer the call to holiness, for we have the saints in heaven and Christ himself, at God’s right hand, as our allies and helps. When we pray to the saints, we humbly ask them to intercede on our behalf.

The people whom the Church explicitly recognizes with the title “Saint” inspire us by their holy lives, giving us hope that the Christian journey is one we can undertake and accomplish. Mary, who bore within her womb the Savior, holds a special place as an example of the disciple who always said “yes” to God’s plan for her. Among the saints, too, are the apostles and other martyrs, who gave their lives to God completely to spread the gospel message. Many others have become those faithful witnesses who have heard God’s call and answered it with all their hearts, often with struggle and heartache but equally with joy in God’s love.

Jesus promised that “my yoke is easy, and my burden light,” as the saints also found. (Matthew 11:29-30) To become a saint is allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives to become like Christ, directing our human restlessness toward its ultimate end. Doing so, we inherit a share in God’s life, to the glory of the Father. It’s as easy as that – and as challenging.

Traveling with God: The lessons along the way
Pilgrimage July 16-19, 2009

The pilgrimage trip up the coast of California was a soul-enriching experience. A group of 50 young adults traveled to various missions, beginning in San Diego, wandering through Santa Barbara, a trip to Hearst Castle, on to Monterey, Oakland, and a final destination point of San Francisco. Each morning was begun with mass, and the bus rides and mission visits were enriched with spiritual talks given by Fr. Andy, Sisters, and Group leaders. It was truly a fulfilling experience to strengthen our faith, visit wondrous missions, and build new friendships all at once.

Highlights of Pilgrimage:

“Pilgrimage 2009 was one of the best experiences of my life. I loved meeting new people and can truly say I’ve made some long-lasting friendships. It was amazing to visit all the beautiful missions and sites of California. Mainly, I grew in my relationship with God – I would encourage all people to go on this trip!”

“This trip made me appreciate why I joined the Seminary!” -Simon Esshaki

“This trip helped me realize how precious I was to God for choosing me to be Catholic.” -Vera Somo

“Where to start? If I were to rate this pilgrimage on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the best, it would be a 9.9…sorry, only the Virgin Mary was Immaculate!” -Andrew Ausi

“I received a number of graces from the Holy Spirit during this pilgrimage. I loved the talks, activities, and small groups were absolutely amazing!”

“What I learned from the pilgrimage is that vocations take time, each person figures it out differently. Also, your vocation is not just for you but for everyone around you. Keep praying to figure it out.”

“I put a lot into this pilgrimage and that’s exactly what I got back. I was on the road to God before, but I lost my way. The road was always there, never changed, and God never left for a second. Now I am finally back. Thank you and God bless.” -Andrew Alayoubi

“This pilgrimage was an amazing retreat. I feel like this experience will lead me on the right path, which will allow me fulfill God’s will.” –Monique Alkatib

“We thank Fr. Andy and the Sisters for arranging this beautiful trip to see all the interesting and beautiful holy places. Thank God for all the youth, for their patience, and spreading God’s voice. We wish them the best.” -Sister Margaret and Sister Farah

“Pilgrimage was yet another eye opening experience that initiated me to get even closer to God and open my consciousness to his calling for me.” -Priscilla Odish

“The entire bus bonded and grew together. We learned about ourselves and grew deeper in our faith. Vocations were helped decided, and the strong commitment and dedication to religious life was the best part. I really enjoyed the entire trip!” -Yousif Benyamin

“As an introduction to vocations, this pilgrimage was very successful! Not only did it define what a vocation is, it also ignited in each ‘pilgrim’ the passion to learn God’s will and see what He has in store for us. Thank you Fr. Andy, Sisters, and all other leaders for a great experience.” -Santa Barota

“A pilgrimage means going to a place and often enough the people you travel with are just as important as the places you go to. On top of the graces we received from the prayers and Holy offerings, we also had the company of each other, strengthening each other as well as the bond that unites us.” –Anthony

“My favorite parts of this trip were seeing everyone getting serious about their vocation, Hearst Castle, A yo Joe, St. Ignatius Church, and StephenNissou.com”

Addiction

By Ankido Sipo

Photo taken at the  2009 Pilgrimage

What causes addiction? Is it too much of something, or the lack of it? I think it’s a little bit of both. When we have too much of something it becomes habitual. Then when we let it go we miss it. We start to think about what things were like before and we want it back; either because our life isn’t completely fulfilled without it, or we’re just bored. Matthew 12:43-12:45 says, “When the unclean Spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, but he finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and brings with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. So shall it be also with this evil generation.” When an evil spirit leaves us, he’ll want to come back stronger, with more evil spirits. If by that time we haven’t filled our spirit with good, then evil easily finds its way in.

People say they’re too busy to go to the gym, or they don’t have enough time to go to Bible Study, but those same people seem to somehow find time to give in to their addiction, whatever it may be. Why is it that we put off what’s good for us but we waste precious time with meaningless things (which is what most addictions are; I’ve never heard of anyone being a gym addict). It’s too easy to say, “Do what’s good for you and stay away from the bad stuff, trust me it’s better.” But, I don’t know one person who can tell me they were disappointed after leaving the Confession booth, or after receiving the Eucharist; the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ. At the same time, anyone that knows and admits they’re addicted to something will feel disgusted with themselves once they indulge in that act. The reason is very obvious: they’ve lost themselves to that certain addiction; now they’re weak and something else is stronger than them. They’ve become slaves to it, and it won’t be Abraham Lincoln saving them from it.

Now what’s worse than losing our self control? God should be the only one to rule over us, not some bodily pleasure. We need to get to the point where only God has power over us, this way we leave everything up to Him, and He will take care of us. What does God want from us? He made us so He knows our needs better than we do, why not let Him fill those needs? He made us so He knows what makes us happy, why not let Him make us happy? If we continue feeding into addiction then we’ll never be able to see past it, and our world will be as small as the boundaries we give ourselves. Let’s free ourselves from addiction and let the Creator show us a meaningful world, one that stretches far beyond our imagination. It all revolves around temptation. When we’re tempted, we have one of two choices. But we have to choose slowly and rationally, otherwise it’ll easily be the wrong one. If we try to justify this temptation, then we’ve already lost. “Is it really that bad” we ask ourselves. Usually when we have to ask ourselves that question, it really is that bad. Trying to justify it only leads to indulgence of that hunger, and what’s next? What’s accomplished? What’s the benefit? Nothing. The food has been eaten, and we’re hungry still.

So what’s the remedy? When our spirit is empty, we must fill it with love; this comes through our Savior Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church. Love and faith in Him will fill that void, and keep the unclean spirits out. Instead of eating from society’s bread, we need to be eating the Bread of Life; food for the spirit. These worldly attractions and addictions will get us no further than our own arms can reach, but why stop ourselves there? Let’s put our arms down and take a couple steps further, maybe a couple steps up a hill, to the foot of the Cross. Then we’re able to see past any physical “need.”

Parishes’ Events

Bishop Mar Ibrahim Ibrahim Appoints a New Pastor for

Saint Ephrem Chaldean Church in Chicago

Sawra, Chicago. On July 12, 2009, Father Zaia Marano, the new pastor of Saint Ephrem Church in Chicago celebrated his first Mass at his new church. Saint Ephrem parish was established in 1904 and is the oldest Chaldean Parish in the United States. The present church building was inaugurated in 1962. The church was served for almost 40 years my Msgr. Edward Bikoma and in recent years also by Father Sanhareeb Youhanna.

Father Zaia Marano, several deacons and hundred of faithful parishioners were received into the Chaldean Diocese of Saint Thomas earlier this year by Bishop Mar Ibrahim Ibrahim, the Eparch of the Diocese. Their former parish was called Saint Thomas Parish. They originally were part of the several thousands Assyrians who entered the Chaldean Church in 2008 with Bishop Mar Bawai Soro.

“There is a great joy and excitement among our members for having such a beautiful church”, said Martin Mirza, one of the new parishioners of Saint Ephrem Church. “For several years we prayed and searched, searched and prayed for any church building, but we found nothing matching our size and strength. But, now God has provided us, all at once, with a beautiful church, hall and rectory. Thanks be to God for his mercy and to our Chaldean Church for their love and support”, added Mr. Mirza. Is Pure Love Possible?

A Talk at Mar Auraha Church

On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, Mar Auraha Church of Chaldeans & Assyrians in Scottsdale, Arizona, invited Deacon Keith Esshaki from St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in San Diego to speak on Chastity before and after marriage and if Pure Love is possible. In the presence of Corbishop Felix Shabi, over 70 people attended the event and were all touched by Deacon Keith’s presentation. “The human body is created in the image of God so we do what God does, which is love. The marital sexual encounter is a foretaste of heaven as Pope John Paul II said. But our love can only be blessed if we do it the way God ordained it which is in the context of a holy marriage. We need to trust God and not be fooled by the devil the way Adam & Eve were. Everyone is called to chastity, those who are not married as well as those who are married. Chastity is the freedom to be able to love as God loves.

Those of you who are not married need to start praying for your future spouse today and start writing letters to your beloved to present it to him/her on the wedding night. Today you may not know who your spouse will be but God knows, so start your commitment today. Your number one example of chastity is the Lord Jesus Himself who gave all His precious blood for His bride, the Church.” Simon, a seminarian, who is Deacon Keith’s son, addressed young people on why he is feeling a calling to the priesthood and said that when he went to Steele Canyon High School he saw a lot of young people falling in sin and ignoring their faith and he is feeling a calling to do something about it by becoming a priest to give an example of chastity. Celebrating the Seventh Anniversary of Bishop Sarhad Yawsip Jammo

On Wednesday, July 22, 2009, representatives from institutions in St. Peter Diocese gathered at St. Peter Cathedral & Hall to celebrate the Seventh Anniversary of the Ordination and Installation of their bishop, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo. After His Excellency celebrated Mass, in the presence of His Excellency Mar Bawai Soro and many priests of the Diocese, he and all the faithful went to the Church hall to continue their celebration. Among the speakers were Bishop Mar Bawai Soro, Archdeacon Sabri Kejbo and Fr. Awraha Mansoor. Finally, Mar Sarhad took the stand and spoke about his thankfulness for the wonderful team of priests and faithful that have worked with him in the mission of the Gospel in his Diocese, comparing them to the “teams” of the 12 Apostles and 72 Disciples that surrounded our Lord and aided him in his ministry. “If Our Lord had help in his mission in this world,” the bishop said, “who am I to attempt this work alone?” The joy at the gathering was tangible as everyone enjoyed their dinner together and came to greet their beloved bishop. God bless you in your ministry, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, and give you many more years of service to his Church!
