GOOD NEWS…ST. PETER CHALDEAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL
Presents the new EDUCATIONAL CENTER HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A BENEFACTOR?
The
Purpose:
How would you like our Chaldean community to have a stable facility
that can accommodate for various activities and programs for the
youth and adults of our community? The Educational Center of St.
Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral will be this place that the youth
and adults of our community can go to get help or to provide help.
This Educational Center can be a place to help those whom are
struggling, educationally, spiritually, or emotionally to find
solutions that can help them improve their unique situations. St.
Peter Church was dedicated in 1983. In 1986, Fr. Michael J. Bazzi
started the following church activities, which all met inside of St.
Peter Church and the Old Rectory because they were the only open
buildings for meetings: Catechism Classes (Preschool through 8th
Grade), Bible and Theology Studies for High School, College
Graduates and Adults, Chaldean Language and Deacon Study
Current
Status:
St. Peter Church Hall was dedicated in 1989 and the majority of the
activities were moved from the church premises to the hall, with the
exception of the Choirs and Catechism classes, Preschool through 2nd
grade. About 200 students register each year in these grades. The
students in the classes that are held inside of the church have to
sit on the floor for many activities. The hall accommodates for
approximately 350 students in First Communion Class and Grades 4th
through 8th.
3rd and 5th grade
are currently taught in the Old Rectory. The hall was not designed
for teaching and the lack of space along with the sound and noise
issues have been a challenge to work with. The community is growing
and it is difficult to coordinate all of the 15 weekly activities
that currently take place. Nearly a thousand parishioners including
young children, youth, adult, and seniors, attend various activities
at the hall.
New
Structure:
Since August of 2006, St. Peter Cathedral has been trying to obtain
a permit to build an Educational Center adjacent to the St. Peter
Hall. As of February 23, 2009, St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral
obtained approval for this permit. The Educational Center will be
separate and independent from the Hall and its management and will
be used for many current activities. One program that it will be
used for is the St. Peter Catechism Classes. The Educational Center
will consist of 12 rooms to be used for grades Preschool thru 8th
grade and the Office for the Catechism Classes. There will also be a
storage room for equipment, books, etc. for all of the activities
held there. During the week, these multi-purpose rooms will be used
by the St. Peter Cathedral Religious Groups to facilitate their
meetings and activities. The current groups are as follows: Deacons,
Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, Choir, Sacred Heart Sodality,
St. Anthony Sodality, Aramaic-Chaldean Study, Adult Chaldean Bible
Study, Adult English Bible Study, High School Bible Study, Breath of
Life Youth Group, M.O.M.'s Group, Legion of Mary, and the Catechism
Class Teachers
The
Educational Center will not be limited to the existing groups and
activities, but rather will be a facility that can accommodate for
any future Cathedral programs and activities. The avenue is open for
programs like the following to start: Peer Counseling, Mentoring,
Tutoring, Religious Lectures, After-school Activities, Music
lessons, College and Career Workshops and more.
How Would
You Like To Be A Benefactor?
The building
of the Educational Center will cost approximately one million
dollars. This is a large project and to make this dream a reality,
the pledge goal for every child and adult, young or old, should be
to save and contribute a minimum of $100 each over the next year. To
thank everyone for their help, there will be a list of all of the
contributors at the entrance of the Educational Center; a legacy to
remain for generations to come. Please consider the obligation that
is asked of you as a parishioner and help in this initial step of
starting something new and needed for our community. With your
pledge and the pledge of other parishioners, our fundraising efforts
will become the cornerstone of this project in order for us to break
ground.
Due to the
economic financial situation, the Cathedral is aware that the
community may be under a tighter budget, but please keep in mind
that education is the priority of the Cathedral for our community.
With the help of God and St. Peter, our Patron, and under the
direction of our beloved Bishop Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, of St.
Peter Diocese, our Clergy, the Cathedral Groups, and all
Parishioners, we will reach our goal having faith that the Lord will
provide.
Thank you in
advance for your tremendous support of our church. May God bless you
for your generosity.
-Rev. Michael J. Bazzi

Prayer
is central to the Christian way of life; it is the
path that leads us to communion with God. Just as
Jesus often and always prayed to his heavenly
Father, so he taught his followers to pray.
What
is prayer? One might say that prayer is “talking to
God.” Another might see it more as “listening for
the promptings of the Holy Spirit” or “raising one’s
mind to the Lord.” Some may pray only in a formal
way,
together with others in a church. Many also pray at
home alone, in the privacy of their rooms and their
own quiet thoughts.
We
pray before meals, in the car on the way to work,
when trouble disturbs our lives, when joys lift our
minds to God. We pray when those we love are sick,
when a child is born, when the elderly die, when
tragedy strikes. We pray for guidance when in doubt,
for forgiveness of our sins, to ask for help, to
give thanks for our blessings. In short, we pray
always. Prayer thus can and should touch every
moment of the day.
Christian
prayer over the centuries has taken on many forms.
The Eucharistic liturgy, representing the
sacrifice of Jesus Christ, in which he offered his
Body and Blood at the Last Supper - prefiguring his
passion and death on the Cross - is the supreme
prayer of the Christian faithful in the form of a
holy Oblation (Qurbana). Within the liturgy we join
our minds, hearts and voices to worship God as we
offer him our praise, thanksgiving, petitions and
intercessions.
Prayer
can include meditation and contemplation; reading of
the Scriptures or other written works of faith;
using the Psalms, the prayer book of the Jewish
people and of Jesus Christ, as in the Liturgy of the
Hours (Sapra, Tahra, Ramsha & Lilya), and the Lord’s
Prayer and other formal prayers, used at liturgy or
on other occasions.
When
his followers asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he
cautioned them against multiplying words and
rattling off long prayers as the pagans do - “For
your Father knows your needs before you ask him.”
(cf. Matthew 6:7-8) Rather, Jesus said, as he taught
them his famous prayer, “pray like this.” Jesus
taught his disciples to address God as he himself
did, as “Abba” - Father. Everything else in this
prayer and in the life of Christian prayer flows
from this relationship that Jesus has reminded us
of, that we are sons and daughters of God. Thus,
when we revere God’s name as holy, when we pray that
his kingdom will come, when we pray that his will be
done, we are offering that praise and worship to the
Father as his beloved children.
In
the Lord’s prayer, we ask the Father to give us what
we need: daily bread to sustain us in life (both the
earthly bread, and the Eucharistic Bread, which is
the Body of Christ); forgiveness of our sins as we
have
forgiven others; and that God may strengthen us when
we are tempted to sin, and that he may deliver us
from the power of evil.
From
baptism to burial, from daybreak to nightfall, at
home and away, we Christians are people of prayer.
Believers in many religions also pray, according to
their own tradition, so we may say that one may pray
without being a Christian, but one cannot truly be a
Christian without a life of prayer.

Great

On the Feast of Mar Abba
the Great, Friday, February 13, 2009, the Altar in
the Seminary of Mar Abba the Great was blessed by
Mar Sarhad Yawsip

World-ism
By Tariq Attar
From the book of Job 8:4, the
world is built on a foundation set by God. Since God doesn’t make
mistakes, there has to be another problem. Everywhere we look, we
see a world that revolves around secularism or worldism. We are all
participants in this, and we have brought it into our home, work and
church. The world as it stands now is comprised of a culture of
death, as diagnosed by the great Pope John Paul II.
The definition of family is deteriorating,
and reality looks as dark as a tunnel, not knowing whether the light
at the end is a train or a sun. At Golgotha, all of
Christ’s followers left Him, except for His Mother and St. John, and
for a second it looked like evil has won. However, the power of
Christ’s resurrection defeated sin and death.
Hope is sometimes all we
have, but it is hope not in a world filled with politics, but in
Christ. In the culture of worldliness, our job as Christians is to
be sent out into the world and to conform it to the will of God. God
incarnates into the world and reconciles us to Himself, to conform
our will to His so that we might learn how to love.
However, we sometimes try to conform the
Church to the way of the world. The world changed
because of our Catholic Christian faith, which has sparked an
internal and external change in people’s lives since the foundation
of the Church.
We can
change the world by first changing ourselves.
Romans 8:12-13
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh to live
according to the flesh. For if you live
according to the flesh, you shall die: but if by the Spirit you
mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live.” We must live
according to the spirit, just like the early Christians, many of
which were martyrs. While we live in this world, we actually belong
to the kingdom of heaven as Saint Paul teaches, “we are citizens of
heaven.” Jesus proclaims to Pontius Pilot,
John 18:36: “Jesus
answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of
this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be
delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.” If we
belong to the spiritual realm, then our enemies must be from a
spiritual realm also. St. Paul:
“We
wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and
powers of wickedness in high places.” The devil cannot make
us do anything, but he can influence our decision to be conformed to
his will, so we must always stay vigilant. St. Peter tells us “The
devil, like a roaring lion, is going through the world seeking the
ruin of souls. Resist him, steadfast in the faith.” St. Peter, an
apostle, was actually called Satan by Christ, and so he would know
exactly what the devil is after.
As
parents, it is becoming more difficult for us to filter out the evil
in the world from our kids. As a custodian to these heavenly gifts
(our children), it is important not just to insure their success on
earth, but to insure their heavenly destination.
We cannot depend only on teaching
institutions (colleges, private schools, etc), which we have trusted
for many years to teach our faith, but we need to do the work
ourselves. In addition, we need to become less
worldly, materialistic, and more spiritual, aimed toward heavenly
treasure. Allow the Catholic Church teaching the fullness of the
truth to guide you to Christ our Joy.
This Lenten season, let us focus on making the mission of Christ
come true in ourselves, family and then in the world. Let’s conform
our will to God’s, and live in the world without being worldly, but
according to the spirit (our connection to God). If you’re a parent,
hold your kids by the hand and walk with God.
_____
FINALLY, ONE IN
CHRIST
By Arbella Rasho
The
transition from the Assyrian Church of the East (ACOE) to the
Chaldean Catholic Church was
definitely not an easy one. As a youth caught up in this calamity,
it was both heart wrenching and heavenly trial that tested my faith.
I and my family left the ACOE because of deep disagreement in regard
to the unity movement of our shepherd, Bishop Mar Bawai Soro. After
leaving, we didn’t have a place to come home to—no sense of
belonging anywhere—but the Chaldean Catholic Church humbly accepted
us, just as the Innkeeper accepted Mary and Joseph into his stable.
This conversion was a difficult one to say the least. I came from
the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church of the East, yet had the hardest
time saying I was Catholic. The thought that kept repeating in my
mind was, “If we were Catholic this whole time, why then have we
been separated from the Catholic Church for all this age?” After
some research and reflection I came to this uncomplicated truth: I
am not changing my faith (because both Churches have the same faith)
but I am only uniting my Church with the Catholic Church! I am
becoming “One in Christ” and therefore fulfilling God’s Will.
Although this is simply stated, yet it was so hard to accept. But
when I red James 1:2-3 things became clearer “Consider it pure joy,
my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you
know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” After
dealing with persecution from friends and family, questioning and
debating about minor differences, and learning the origin of all
these traditions, I finally made my conversion.
I feel this change was both a test & a blessing from the Lord
Almighty. I know I’ve endured through this process many trials but I
prayed that God blesses me more to keep me grounded stronger.
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has
stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
promised to those who love him” James 1:12.

EASTERN RITE CATHOLICS HONOR ST. PAUL AT NAMESAKE
CHURCH
They
speak Aramaic, Jesus' language, and many also are
conversant in Arabic, Farsi and English. Members of
St. Paul Assyrian Chaldean Church in North
Hollywood, who are primarily from Iraq and Iran,
invited parishioners from local Eastern Rite
churches --- of which there are seven in the San
Fernando Region alone --- to participate in a St.
Paul Jubilee liturgical celebration Jan. 16.
“This is the first gathering of local Eastern Rite
Catholics from different churches to celebrate and
pray together as a community," said Father Noel
Gorgis, pastor of St. Paul who presided at the
concelebrated Mass following a vespers prayer
service. Seven clergy members ---
including four priests and three deacons --- from
Chaldean,
Byzantine-Romanian, Syriac, Russian and Greek
Catholic Eastern Rite churches attended. A
congregation of about 100 parishioners from several
parishes participated in the liturgical service,
where most of the congregational
responses and prayers were chanted, rather than
spoken.
In his homiletic reflection, Father Alexei Smith,
archdiocesan director of ecumenical and interfaith
affairs who is also pastor of St. Andrew
Russian-Greek Catholic Church and administrator of
St. Paul Melkite Greek Catholic
Mission, pointed out that St. Paul, a persecutor of
Christians before his conversion on the road to
Damascus, was completely transformed by his
encounter with Christ.
“St. Paul renounced his old life, giving himself
totally to the ministry of reconciliation and the
ministry of the cross that is salvation for all of
us," said Father Smith. "If we remember nothing else
from this year of St. Paul [and] the beautiful
liturgy and reception this evening, I would ask we
remember this phrase: 'God loved me and gave
himself up for me.' In that, you and I will find all
the strength we require."
Rita Khachadoorian, who attends both St. Peter
Armenian Church in Van Nuys and St. Anne Church in
Studio City, called the worship service "awesome and
very spiritual. The whole church was filled with the
Holy Spirit." Byzantine Romanian Catholic Abbot
Nicholas Zachariadis from Holy Resurrection
Monastery in Newberry Springs near Barstow, who had
never attended a Chaldean Mass before, said it was
"wonderful to experience a very ancient Eastern
liturgy --- very different to ours and yet, at the
same time, very similar, too."
St. Paul parishioner Jawan Isha, a native of
Baghdad, Iraq, said having such an event "brings us
together. We all believe in one God. We're all
Christian. There's nothing different between us,
only maybe the language and the
countries; but we all believe the same." Isha, who
has recently lost two close family members due to
the war in Iraq, said Christians back home are
suffering. "It's very dangerous to go to church, but
they still go." St. Paul parish
council member, Edward Baba, agreed that Iraqi
Christians, descended from those converted during
apostolic times, "don't convert" to other faiths.
For local Chaldean Catholics who have left Iraq, he
noted with some pride, "As soon as we see each
other, we speak in Aramaic --- the same language
that Jesus spoke."

News from the Parishes
Valentines Day Celebration in Central Valley
A memorable Valentine Day
party was hosted by St. Thomas and St. Matthew
Catholic Parishes on February 20, 2009 at St. Thomas
Assyrian Chaldean Catholic Church in Turlock, CA.
The celebration began as
Fr. Michael Barota, the Pastor of St. Matthew
Church, greeted the guests and gave thanks to God
for this wonderful occasion. He asked The Lord to
bless this feast, the faithful, and its purpose. He
added “we love everyone as God loves us all”. He
continued to ask the Lord to bless our youth in
their preparation for Youth Convention in 2009, help
& protect them, fill their hearts & minds with His
love & wisdom. Fr. Barota concluded his message with
a prayer.
Then, Fr. Kamal Bidawid the
Pastor of St. Thomas Church, welcomed the guests and
spoke about the true meaning of Love, i.e., the Love
of God, the Sacrifice of Christ, and His love to the
Church. He talked about how St. Paul, in one of his
letters, stressed on three important issues: Faith,
Hope, and Charity. Fr. Bidawid also offered an
advice for our youth. He finally asked the Lord for
His blessings in our lives so that we will continue
to thank, praise and serve Him in His Church.
The guests enjoyed their
dinner and time spent together. They had a wonderful
time with entertaining music and songs performed by
the talented singer Munadhel Tomika, the star of the
evening. The proceeds of this celebration will be
dedicated to support the upcoming 2009 Youth
Convention.

Poway Mission for Chaldean and Assyrian Catholics
Valentine’s
Day:
Every week, kids between the ages of 4 and 16 gather
together to learn about God. The children are
divided into two groups – the young ones who have
yet to take communion, and the spiritually older
kids who have already received the sacrament of
Eucharist. This past week, the theme of Valentine’s
Day and love was taught throughout the class. The
younger children learned about St. Valentine and the
discussion went a bit deeper when talking about
love. They learned the 6 things we should love
always: God, family, friends, neighbors, enemies,
and yourself. After the brief theology lesson, the
kids became were eager to get their valentine goody
bags and begin making heart-shaped cards for their
parents and friends. It was a joyous lesson, filling
the atmosphere & kids hearts with love.
Stations
of the Cross – Week 1:
With lent just days away, the catechism classes will
now focus on Stations of the Cross and the lent
season. We will cover a station or two each week,
leading up to Easter. This will hopefully help the
children better understand Friday “Stations of the
Cross” mass. This week we began with the first two
stations, where Jesus is condemned and then has to
take up His cross. To help the children understand,
we discuss each event and then follow with
activities. The children listened to the stories and
made drawings of the first two stations. Often we
will reenact the scenes, having the kids act out the
parts. We follow each class with prayers and songs
from mass. The kids love gathering each week and
always have enthusiasm and a will to learn more
about their faith.

.

Our
Youth at Palm Springs 2009
On Monday, February 16,
2009, the High School Bible Study students of St.
Peter Chaldean Cathedral in El Cajon, CA went on the
annual Palm Springs Trip with Fr. Michael, Fr.
Andrew and Fr. Peter. "It is by far the most snow we
have ever experienced since we have been going all
these years,” said Fr. Michael.
The youth climbed the
mountains and had a lot of fun with snow blowing
in their faces while exploring God’s creation and
enjoying a day with friends. After hiking in the
snow, the group went to the Date Fair Carnival and
went on rides and enjoyed great food. Later, the
group stopped at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets to
shop until they dropped, tired from a long day of
fun.
