Novena 
of Prayers from the Chaldean Liturgy Composed by 
Mar Abba the Great 
Patriarch of the Church of the East, 540-552 AD 


 

which may begin on the Day of Thanksgiving  
following the Ba'utha of the Ninevites 
and end on the Commemoration of Mar Abba the Great, 
which takes place on the Seventh Friday of Dinha.

 

Opening Prayer - Every Day of Novena

Hearken, Lord, to the words of our prayers, incline your ear to the sound of our supplication, and do not turn your face from the voice of our pleading; grant us (state your intentions), O Kind One upon whom our confidence rests at all times and ages, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

Day 1 - For Wisdom

Sow, O Lord, the good seed of your teaching within our heart, and let drops of your grace rain upon us, that we may grow according to your will, and bear fruits pleasing to your Majesty all the days of our lives, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

Day 2 - For Hope

Establish your hope, O Lord, within us, fill our souls with your assistance, let your grace absolve our sins, and may the eternal mercies of your glorious Trinity come to the aid of your adorers who call and plead to you at all times and ages, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever. 

Day 3 - For Confidence

To you our Hope and Confidence, our Helper and Upholder, O great Fortress to our weakness, we plead: turn to us, O Lord, pardon us and have mercy on us, as you always do, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

Day 4 - For Piety

To you, O Rich in his love, Overflowing in his pity, Kind in his grace, Indescribable in his radiance; O great King of glory, O Being who exists from eternity, do we give thanks, adore and glorify at all times, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

Day 5 - For Forgiveness

Have mercy on us, O Lord our God, and absolve, wipe away and remove our faults through the overflowing mercies of your grace, O Compassionate One and Forgiver of debts and sins, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever. 

Day 6 - For Protection against Satan

Deliver us, O Lord our God, from the deceits and wiles of the enemy, the rebel, with your great and mighty power and your exalted and invincible arm, O Kind One upon whom our confidence rests at all times and ages, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

Day 7 - For Fear of God

To you who sit upon a chariot of cherubim, is extolled by legions of angels, whose order shakes the land and whose command terrifies the earth, it is our duty to confess, adore and glorify at all times, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

 

Day 8 - For Strength

O Pitier of the faults of sinners in his great patience, pity, O Lord our God, the feebleness, the corruption and the concupiscence of our miserable race, O Compassionate One and Forgiver of debts and sins, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.  

 

Day 9 - For Wonder

O Being without beginning or end, Hidden and Incomprehensible Nature, Eternal One without limitation, Creator, Maker and Provider for all, it is our duty to thank, adore and glorify you at all times, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One:

Have mercy on us.

Final Prayer - Every Day of Novena

We hope in you, O Lord, are confident in your mercies and plead to your grace: be an Aid in our weakness, a Fortress in our tribulation, a Sustainer in our neediness, a Gatherer in our dispersion, a Savior in our misery, an Absolver in our sinfulness, and do not turn your face away from the sound of our pleading, O Kind One in whom our confidence rests at all times and ages, Lord of all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit forever.
