The new Chaldean leader, formerly
known as Archbishop Emmanuel Delly, was born on September
27, 1927, and ordained to the priesthood on December 21,
1952. In 1962 he became an auxiliary bishop of Baghdad, and
in 1967 was named titular Archbishop of Kaskar. Upon his
election as a Patriarch of Babylon for the Chaldeans, he
took the name Emmanuel III. He studied in Rome and received
multi degrees: a Ph.D. in Theology, another one in the Canon
Law of the Church and a Master degree I Philosophy, from
the Urbaniana University. He
was selected Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in city of
Rome on December 3, 2003, by the Synod of the Bishops of
the Chaldean Church. The canonical enthronement took place
in Baghdad on December 19, 2003. The new Patriarch is known
for his apostolic zeal and solidarity with his suffering
people.
On November 24, 2007, the Chaldean Catholic Church around
the world rejoiced as her Patriarch, Mar Emmanuel III Delly,
was made a Cardinal at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The
ceremony installed also 22 other heirarchs from around the
world as Cardinals, but this is the first time in history
that a Chaldean Patriarch was given the title. |
