First Reading:
Leviticus 19:1-4; 9-14
And the LORD said to Moses, "Say to all the
congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be
holy; for I the LORD your God am holy. Every one of
you shall revere his mother and his father, and you
shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. Do
not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten
gods: I am the LORD your God…When you reap the
harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field
to its very border, neither shall you gather the
gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not
strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather
the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave
them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the
LORD your God. You shall not steal, nor deal
falsely, nor lie to one another. And you shall not
swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of
your God: I am the LORD. You shall not oppress your
neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired servant
shall not remain with you all night until the
morning. You shall not curse the deaf or put a
stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear
your God: I am the LORD.”

Second Reading: Isaiah 29:13-end
And the Lord said: "Because this people draw
near with their mouth and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me, and their fear
of me is a commandment of men learned by rote;
therefore, behold, I will again do marvelous things
with this people, wonderful and marvelous; and the
wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the
discernment of their discerning men shall be hid.
Woe to those who hide deep from the LORD their
counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say,
"Who sees us? Who knows us?" You turn things upside
down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay; that
the thing made should say of its maker, "He did not
make me"; or the thing formed say of him who formed
it, "He has no understanding"?

Epistle: 1 Thessalonians
2:1-12
or you yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to
you was not in vain; but though we had already
suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as
you know, we had courage in our God to declare to
you the gospel of God in the face of great
opposition. For our appeal does not spring from
error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile; but
just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted
with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but
to please God who tests our hearts. For we never
used either words of flattery, as you know, or a
cloak for greed, as God is witness; nor did we seek
glory from men, whether from you or from others,
though we might have made demands as apostles of
Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse
taking care of her children. So, being
affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to
share with you not only the gospel of God but also
our own selves, because you had become very dear to
us. For you remember our labor and toil, brethren;
we worked night and day, that we might not burden
any of you, while we preached to you the gospel of
God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and
righteous and blameless was our behavior to you
believers; for you know how, like a father with his
children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged
you and charged you to lead a life worthy of God,
who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

Gospel: Luke 17:5-19
The apostles said to
the Lord, "Increase our faith!" And the Lord said,
"If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you
could say to this sycamine tree, 'Be rooted up, and
be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.
"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or
keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from
the field, 'Come at once and sit down at table'?
Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for
me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and
drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? Does
he thank the servant because he did what was
commanded? So you also, when you have done all that
is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we
have only done what was our duty.'"
On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between
Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he
was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and
lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master,
have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them,
"Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they
went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he
saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God
with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus'
feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are
the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise
to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him,
"Rise and go your way; your faith has made you
well."

Reading: Leviticus 19:15-18; 20:9-14
The Lord said to Moses: "You shall do no
injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the
poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall
you judge your neighbor. You shall not go up and down as
a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand
forth against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.
You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you
shall reason with your neighbor, lest you bear sin
because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear any
grudge against the sons of your own people, but you
shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD…For
every one who curses his father or his mother shall be
put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother,
his blood is upon him.”

Second Reading: Isaiah 30:1-14
They are a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who will
not hear the instruction of the LORD; who say to the
seers, "See not"; and to the prophets, "Prophesy not to
us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy
illusions, leave the way, turn aside from the path, let
us hear no more of the Holy One of Israel." Therefore
thus says the Holy One of Israel, "Because you despise
this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and
rely on them; therefore this iniquity shall be to you
like a break in a high wall, bulging out, and about to
collapse, whose crash comes suddenly, in an instant; and
its breaking is like that of a potter's vessel which is
smashed so ruthlessly that among its fragments not a
sherd is found with which to take fire from the hearth,
or to dip up water out of the cistern."

Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 2:14-3:all
What thanksgiving can we render to God for you, for all
the joy which we feel for your sake before our God,
praying earnestly night and day that we may see you face
to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? Now
may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus,
direct our way to you; and may the Lord make you
increase and abound in love to one another and to all
men, as we do to you, so that he may establish your
hearts as blameless in holiness before our God and
Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his
saints.

Gospel: Luke 18:1-14
He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who
neither feared God nor regarded man; and there was a
widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying,
'Vindicate me against my adversary.' For a while he
refused; but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I
neither fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow
bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me
out by her continual coming.'" And the Lord said, "Hear
what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God
vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will
he delay long over them? I tell you, he will vindicate
them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes,
will he find faith on earth?"
He also told this parable to some who trusted in
themselves that they were righteous and despised others:
"Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee
and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and
prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am
not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I
give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector,
standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to
heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful
to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his
house justified rather than the other; for every one who
exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles
himself will be exalted."

Deuteronomy 6:20-7:5
Moses said to the people: "When your son asks you
in time to come, 'What is the meaning of the testimonies
and the statutes and the ordinances which the LORD our
God has commanded you?' then you shall say to your son,
'We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt; and the LORD brought
us out of Egypt with a mighty hand; and the LORD showed
signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and
against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes;
and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us
in and give us the land which he swore to give to our
fathers. And the LORD commanded us to do all these
statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always,
that he might preserve us alive, as at this day.”

Second Reading:
Isaiah 31
Woe to those who go down to
Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots
because they are many and in horsemen because they are
very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
or consult the LORD! And yet he is wise and brings
disaster, he does not call back his words, but will
arise against the house of the evildoers, and against
the helpers of those who work iniquity. The Egyptians
are men, and not God; and their horses are flesh, and
not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, the
helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall, and
they will all perish together.

Epistle:
2 Thessalonians 1
This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that
you may be made worthy of the kingdom of God, for which
you are suffering—since indeed God deems it just to
repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to
grant rest with us to you who are afflicted, when the
Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty
angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance upon those
who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the
gospel of our Lord Jesus. They shall suffer the
punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints,
and to be marveled at in all who have believed, because
our testimony to you was believed. To this end we always
pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his
call, and may fulfill every good resolve and work of
faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus
may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to
the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 18:35-19:10
As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by
the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by,
he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of
Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of
David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front
rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out
all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And
Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him;
and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want
me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my
sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your
faith has made you well." And immediately he received
his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the
people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there
was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector,
and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could
not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of
stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a
sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said
to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must
stay at your house today." So he made haste and came
down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it
they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a
man who is a sinner." And Zacchaeus stood and said to
the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to
the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I
restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today
salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son
of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save
the lost."

Second Sunday of Elijah

First Reading:
Deuteronomy 7:7-11
Moses said to the people: “It was not because you
were more in number than any other people that the LORD
set his love upon you and chose you, for you were the
fewest of all peoples; but it is because the LORD loves
you, and is keeping the oath which he swore to your
fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty
hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from
the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that
the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps
covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and
keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, and
requites to their face those who hate him, by destroying
them; he will not be slack with him who hates him, he
will requite him to his face. You shall therefore be
careful to do the commandment, and the statutes, and the
ordinances, which I command you this day.”

Second Reading:
Isaiah 30:15-26
For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, "In
returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and
in trust shall be your strength." And you would not, but
you said, "No! We will speed upon horses," therefore you
shall speed away; and, "We will ride upon swift steeds,"
therefore your pursuers shall be swift. A thousand shall
flee at the threat of one, at the threat of five you
shall flee, till you are left like a flagstaff on the
top of a mountain, like a signal on a hill. Therefore
the LORD waits to be gracious to you; therefore he
exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a
God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

Epistle: 2 Thessalonians 2:15-3:18
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is
living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition
that you received from us. For you yourselves know how
you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were
with you, we did not eat any one's bread without paying,
but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we
might not burden any of you. It was not because we have
not that right, but to give you in our conduct an
example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we
gave you this command: If any one will not work, let him
not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in
idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such
persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ
to do their work in quietness and to earn their own
living. Brethren, do not be weary in well-doing.

Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat
beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so
that he got into a boat and sat there; and the whole
crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things
in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he
sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds
came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky
ground, where they had not much soil, and immediately
they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but
when the sun rose they were scorched; and since they had
no root they withered away. Other seeds fell upon
thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other
seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a
hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears,
let him hear."
Then
the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to
them in parables?" And he answered them, "To you it has
been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven,
but to them it has not been given. For to him who has
will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from
him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing
they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do
they understand. With them indeed is fulfilled the
prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'You shall indeed hear
but never understand, and you shall indeed see but never
perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull, and
their ears are heavy of hearing, and their eyes they
have closed, lest they should perceive with their eyes,
and hear with their ears, and understand with their
heart, and turn to me and be healed.' But blessed are
your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men
longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to
hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
"Hear then the parable of the sower. When any one hears
the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the
evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in his
heart; this is what was sown along the path. As for what
was sown on rocky ground, this is he who hears the word
and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root
in himself, but endures for a while, and when
tribulation or persecution arises on account of the
word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown
among thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the
cares of the world and the delight in riches choke the
word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on
good soil, this is he who hears the word and understands
it; he indeed bears fruit, and yields, in one case a
hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

Deuteronomy 7:12-end
Moses said to the people: "And because you
hearken to these ordinances, and keep and do them, the
Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the
steadfast love which he swore to your fathers to keep;
he will love you, bless you, and multiply you; he will
also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your
ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the
increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, in
the land which he swore to your fathers to give you. You
shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be
male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.
And the Lord will take away from you all sickness; and
none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will
he inflict upon you.”

Isaiah 32:1-33:6
Woe to you, destroyer, who yourself have not been
destroyed; you treacherous one, with whom none has dealt
treacherously! When you have ceased to destroy, you will
be destroyed; and when you have made an end of dealing
treacherously, you will be dealt with treacherously. O
Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for thee. Be our arm
every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble. At
the thunderous noise peoples flee, at the lifting up of
thyself nations are scattered; and spoil is gathered as
the caterpillar gathers; as locusts leap, men leap upon
it. The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will
fill Zion with justice and righteousness; and he will be
the stability of your times, abundance of salvation,
wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is his
treasure.

Epistle: Philippians 1:12-25
I know that through your prayers and the help of the
Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my
deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that
I shall not be at all ashamed, but that with full
courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body,
whether by life or by death. For to me to live is
Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the
flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I
shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between
the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for
that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more
necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know
that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your
progress and joy in the faith.

Matthew 13:24-43
Another parable he put before them, saying, "The
kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed
good seed in his field; but while men were sleeping, his
enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went
away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then
the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the
householder came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow
good seed in your field? How then has it weeds?' He said
to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to
him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he
said, 'No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the
wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the
harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers,
Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be
burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"
Another parable he put before them, saying, "The kingdom
of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man
took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all
seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of
shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air
come and make nests in its branches."
He told them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven is
like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures
of flour, till it was all leavened."
All this Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed he
said nothing to them without a parable. This was to
fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: "I will open my
mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden
since the foundation of the world."
Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his
disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the
parable of the weeds of the field." He answered, "He who
sows the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the
world, and the good seed means the sons of the kingdom;
the weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy
who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the close of
the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds
are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the
close of the age. The Son of man will send his angels,
and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of
sin and all evildoers, and throw them into the furnace
of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. Then
the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of
their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
