Ascension

First Reading:
Isaiah 6
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord
sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his
train filled the temple. Above him stood the
seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered
his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with
two he flew. And one called to another and said:
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole
earth is full of his glory." And the foundations of
the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called,
and the house was filled with smoke. And I said:
"Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean
lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of
unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the
Lord of hosts!" Then flew one of the seraphim to me,
having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken
with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth,
and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your
guilt is taken away, and your sin forgiven." And I
heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I
send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am
I! Send me."

Second Reading:
Acts 1:15-end
In those days
Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of
persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and
said, "Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled,
which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth
of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those
who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us,
and was allotted his share in this ministry…For it
is written in the book of Psalms, 'Let his
habitation become desolate, and let there be no one
to live in it'; and 'His office let another take.'
So one of the men who have accompanied us during all
the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among
us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day
when he was taken up from us—one of these men must
become with us a witness to his resurrection." And
they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who
was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed
and said, "Lord, who knows the hearts of all men,
show which one of these two you have chosen to take
the place in this ministry and apostleship from
which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place."
And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on
Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven
apostles.

Epistle: Philippians 1:27-2:11
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel
of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am
absent, I may hear of you that you stand firm in one
spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the
faith of the Gospel, and not frightened in anything
by your opponents. This is a clear omen to them of
their destruction, but of your salvation, and that
from God. For it has been granted to you that for
the sake of Christ you should not only believe in
him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the
same conflict which you saw and now hear to be mine.
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any
incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit,
any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being
of the same mind, having the same love, being in
full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from
selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others
better than yourselves. Let each of you look not
only to his own interests, but also to the interests
of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is
yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the
form of God, did not count equality with God a thing
to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form
of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And
being found in human form he humbled himself and
became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on
him the name which is above every name, that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and
on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.

Gospel:
Mark 16:2-end
And very early on the first day of the week they
went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they
were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the
stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking
up, they saw that the stone was rolled back;—it was
very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young
man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white
robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do
not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was
crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the
place where they laid him. But go, tell his
disciples and Peter that he is going before you to
Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you."
And they went out and fled from the tomb; for
trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and
they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.
Now when he rose early on the
first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary
Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.
She went and told those who had been with him, as
they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he
was alive and had been seen by her, they would not
believe it. After this he appeared in another form
to two of them, as they were walking into the
country. And they went back and told the rest, but
they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to
the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he
upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of
heart, because they had not believed those who saw
him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go
into all the world and preach the gospel to the
whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will
be saved; but he who does not believe will be
condemned. And these signs will accompany those who
believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they
will speak in new tongues; they will pick up
serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it
will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the
sick; and they will recover." So then the Lord
Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up
into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
And they went forth and preached everywhere, while
the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message
by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Pentecost
May 11, 2008
First
Reading: Exodus 19:1-9; 20:18-21
Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to
him out of the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to
the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: You
have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore
you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now
therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my
covenant, you shall be my own possession among all
peoples; for all the earth is mine, and you shall be to
me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the
words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."
So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and
set before them all these words which the Lord had
commanded him. And all the people answered together and
said, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do." And
Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. And
the Lord said to Moses, "Lo, I am coming to you in a
thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with
you, and may also believe you for ever." Then Moses told
the words of the people to the Lord…Now when all the
people perceived the thunderings and the lightnings and
the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the
people were afraid and trembled; and they stood afar
off, and said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will
hear; but let not God speak to us, lest we die." And
Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come
to prove you, and that the fear of him may be before
your eyes, that you may not sin." And the people stood
afar off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness
where God was.

Second Reading: Acts
2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all
together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from
heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all
the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to
them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each
one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in
Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under
heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together,
and they were bewildered, because each one heard them
speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and
wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking
Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his
own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites
and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from
Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we
hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of
God." And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one
another, "What does this mean?"

Epistle: 1 Corinthians
12:1-27
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want
you to be uninformed. You know that when you were
heathen, you were led astray to dumb idols, however you
may have been moved. Therefore I want you to understand
that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says
"Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord"
except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of
gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of
service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of
working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in
every one. To each is given the manifestation of the
Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the
Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the
utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to
another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of
healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of
miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to
distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of
tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All
these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who
apportions to each one individually as he wills. For
just as the body is one and has many members, and all
the members of the body, though many, are one body, so
it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or
free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the
body does not consist of one member but of many. If the
foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not
belong to the body," that would not make it any less a
part of the body. And if the ear should say, "Because I
am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would
not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole
body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the
whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of
smell? But as it is, God arranged the organs in the
body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a
single organ, where would the body be? As it is, there
are many parts, yet one body.

Gospel: John 14:15-17,
25-26; 15:26-16:15
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I
will pray the Father, and he will give you another
Counselor, to be with you for ever, even the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with
you, and will be in you…These things I have spoken to
you, while I am still with you. But the Counselor, the
Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he
will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance
all that I have said to you…But when the Counselor
comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even
the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he
will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses,
because you have been with me from the beginning. I have
said all this to you to keep you from falling away. They
will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is
coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering
service to God. And they will do this because they have
not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these
things to you, that when their hour comes you may
remember that I told you of them. I did not say these
things to you from the beginning, because I was with
you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of
you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have
said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.
Nevertheless I tell you the
truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I
do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but
if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he
will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness
and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not
believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to
the Father, and you will see me no more; concerning
judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I
have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear
them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide
you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own
authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he
will declare to you the things that are to come. He will
glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it
to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I
said that he will take what is mine and declare it to
you.”

Second Sunday of the
Apostles
May 18, 2008
First Reading:
Joel 2:15-26
Fear not, O land; be glad
and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! Fear
not, you beasts of the field, for the pastures of the
wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit, the fig
tree and vine give their full yield. Be glad, O sons of
Zion, and rejoice in the Lord, your God; for he has
given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured
down for you abundant rain, the early and the latter
rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of
grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will
restore to you the years which the swarming locust has
eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my
great army, which I sent among you. You shall eat in
plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord
your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my
people shall never again be put to shame.

Second Reading:
Acts 4:5-22
On the next day the rulers
and elders and scribes were gathered together in
Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and
John and Alexander, and all who were of the
high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the
midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did
you do this?" Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,
said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, if we
are being examined today concerning a good deed done to
a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it
known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that
by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you
crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this
man is standing before you well. This is the stone which
was rejected by you builders, but which has become the
head of the corner. And there is salvation in no one
else, for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved."

Epistle:
1 Corinthians 5:6-6:11
When one of you has a grievance against a brother, does
he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the
saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the
world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you
incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that
we are to judge angels? How much more, matters
pertaining to this life! If then you have such cases,
why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed
by the church? I say this to your shame. Can it be that
there is no man among you wise enough to decide between
members of the brotherhood, but brother goes to law
against brother, and that before unbelievers? To have
lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you. Why
not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?
But you yourselves wrong and defraud, and that even your
own brethren. Do you not know that the unrighteous will
not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived;
neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
sexual perverts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor
drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the
kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were
washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our
God.

Gospel: Luke 7:31-end
Jesus said, "To what then shall I compare the men of
this generation, and what are they like? They are like
children sitting in the market place and calling to one
another, 'We piped to you, and you did not dance; we
wailed, and you did not weep.' For John the Baptist has
come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say,
'He has a demon.' The Son of man has come eating and
drinking; and you say, 'Behold, a glutton and a
drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet
wisdom is justified by all her children." One of the
Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into
the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table. And
behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she
learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house,
brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing
behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his
feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her
head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the
ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw
it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he
would have known who and what sort of woman this is who
is touching him, for she is a sinner." And Jesus
answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say
to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" "A
certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred
denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay,
he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him
more?" Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he
forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged
rightly." Then turning toward the woman he said to
Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you
gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet
with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me
no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased
to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil,
but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I
tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for
she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves
little." And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
Then those who were at table with him began to say among
themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" And
he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in
peace."

Third Sunday of the Apostles
May 25, 2008
First Reading:
Deuteronomy 1:3-17
Moses said to the people,
"At that time I said to you, 'I am not able alone to
bear you; the Lord your God has multiplied you, and
behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for
multitude. May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make
you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you,
as he has promised you! How can I bear alone the weight
and burden of you and your strife? Choose wise,
understanding, and experienced men, according to your
tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.' And you
answered me, 'The thing that you have spoken is good for
us to do.' So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and
experienced men, and set them as heads over you,
commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds,
commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers,
throughout your tribes. And I charged your judges at
that time, 'Hear the cases between your brethren, and
judge righteously between a man and his brother or the
alien that is with him. You shall not be partial in
judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike;
you shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the
judgment is God's; and the case that is too hard for
you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.'
_______________
Second Reading:
Isaiah 1:1-9
The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw
concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah,
Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Hear, O
heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord has spoken:
"Sons have I reared and brought up, but they have
rebelled against me. The ox knows its owner, and the ass
its master's crib; but Israel does not know, my people
does not understand." Ah, sinful nation, a people laden
with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, sons who deal
corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have
despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly
estranged. Why will you still be smitten, that you
continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole
heart faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head,
there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and
bleeding wounds; they are not pressed out, or bound up,
or softened with oil. Your country lies desolate, your
cities are burned with fire; in your very presence
aliens devour your land; it is desolate, as overthrown
by aliens. And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth
in a vineyard, like a lodge in a cucumber field, like a
besieged city. If the Lord of hosts had not left us a
few survivors, we should have been like Sodom, and
become like Gomorrah.
_______________
Epistle:
1 Corinthians 7:1-7
Now
concerning the matters about which you wrote, “It is
well for a man not to touch a woman.” But because of the
temptation to immorality, each man should have his own
wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should
give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the
wife to her husband. For the wife does not rule over her
own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband
does not rule over his own body, but the wife does. Do
not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a
season, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but
then come together again, lest Satan tempt you through
lack of self-control. I say this by way of concession,
not of command. I wish that all were as I myself am. But
each has his own special gift from God, one of one kind
and one of another.
______________
Gospel: Luke 10:23-end
Then turning to the disciples he said privately,
"Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! For I tell
you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you
see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and
did not hear it." And behold, a lawyer stood up to put
him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written
in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with
all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he
said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you
will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said to
Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man
was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell
among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and
departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest
was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed
by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came
to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a
Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and
when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and
bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he
set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and
took care of him. And the next day he took out two
denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take
care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay
you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you
think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the
robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him."
And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Now as they
went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman
named Martha received him into her house. And she had a
sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and
listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with
much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do
you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?
Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her,
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many
things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good
portion, which shall not be taken away from her."
