First Reading:
Genesis 16:1-17:all
Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She
had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar; and Sarai
said to Abram, "Behold now, the Lord has prevented
me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may
be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram
hearkened to the voice of Sarai. So, after Abram had
dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai,
Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and
gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went
in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw
that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on
her mistress. And Sarai said to Abram, "May the
wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid to your
embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived,
she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge
between you and me!" But Abram said to Sarai,
"Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as
you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and
she fled from her.
The angel of the Lord found
her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the
spring on the way to Shur. And he said, "Hagar, maid
of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you
going?" She said, "I am fleeing from my mistress
Sarai." The angel of the Lord said to her, "Return
to your mistress, and submit to her." The angel of
the Lord also said to her, "I will so greatly
multiply your descendants that they cannot be
numbered for multitude." And the angel of the Lord
said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and shall
bear a son; you shall call his name Ishmael; because
the Lord has given heed to your affliction. He shall
be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man
and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell
over against all his kinsmen." So she called the
name of the Lord who spoke to her, "Thou art a God
of seeing"; for she said, "Have I really seen God
and remained alive after seeing him?" Therefore the
well was called Beerlahairoi; it lies between Kadesh
and Bered.
And Hagar bore Abram a son;
and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar
bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when
Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
When Abram was ninety-nine
years old the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to
him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be
blameless. And I will make my covenant between me
and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." Then
Abram fell on his face; and God said to him,
"Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be
the father of a multitude of nations. No longer
shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be
Abraham; for I have made you the father of a
multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly
fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings
shall come forth from you. And I will establish my
covenant between me and you and your descendants
after you throughout their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your
descendants after you. And I will give to you, and
to your descendants after you, the land of your
sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an
everlasting possession; and I will be their God."
And God said to Abraham, "As
for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your
descendants after you throughout their generations.
This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between
me and you and your descendants after you: Every
male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be
circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it
shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
He that is eight days old among you shall be
circumcised; every male throughout your generations,
whether born in your house, or bought with your
money from any foreigner who is not of your
offspring, both he that is born in your house and he
that is bought with your money, shall be
circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh
an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male who
is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin
shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my
covenant."
And God said to Abraham, "As
for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name
Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless
her, and moreover I will give you a son by her; I
will bless her, and she shall be a mother of
nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." Then
Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to
himself, "Shall a child be born to a man who is a
hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years
old, bear a child?" And Abraham said to God, "O that
Ishmael might live in thy sight!" God said, "No, but
Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall
call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant
with him as an everlasting covenant for his
descendants after him. As for Ishmael, I have heard
you; behold, I will bless him and make him fruitful
and multiply him exceedingly; he shall be the father
of twelve princes, and I will make him a great
nation. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac,
whom Sarah shall bear to you at this season next
year."
When he had finished talking
with him, God went up from Abraham. Then Abraham
took Ishmael his son and all the slaves born in his
house or bought with his money, every male among the
men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh
of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to
him. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And
Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. That very
day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised;
and all the men of his house, those born in the
house and those bought with money from a foreigner,
were circumcised with him.

Second Reading:
Joshua 9:15-end
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant
with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the
congregation swore to them. At the end of three days
after they had made a covenant with them, they heard
that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt
among them. And the people of Israel set out and
reached their cities on the third day. Now their
cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and
Kiriathjearim. But the people of Israel did not kill
them, because the leaders of the congregation had
sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then
all the congregation murmured against the leaders.
But all the leaders said to all the congregation,
"We have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of
Israel, and now we may not touch them. This we will
do to them, and let them live, lest wrath be upon
us, because of the oath which we swore to them." And
the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they
became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all
the congregation, as the leaders had said of them.
Joshua summoned them, and he
said to them, "Why did you deceive us, saying, 'We
are very far from you,' when you dwell among us? Now
therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall
always be slaves, hewers of wood and drawers of
water for the house of my God." They answered
Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants for a
certainty that the Lord your God had commanded his
servant Moses to give you all the land, and to
destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before
you; so we feared greatly for our lives because of
you, and did this thing. And now, behold, we are in
your hand: do as it seems good and right in your
sight to do to us." So he did to them, and delivered
them out of the hand of the people of Israel; and
they did not kill them. But Joshua made them that
day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the
congregation and for the altar of the Lord, to
continue to this day, in the place which he should
choose.

Epistle: Romans 12
I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies
of God, to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that
you may prove what is the will of God, what is good
and acceptable and perfect.
For by the grace given to me I
bid every one among you not to think of himself more
highly than he ought to think, but to think with
sober judgment, each according to the measure of
faith which God has assigned him. For as in one body
we have many members, and all the members do not
have the same function, so we, though many, are one
body in Christ, and individually members one of
another. Having gifts that differ according to the
grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in
proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving;
he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in
his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality;
he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of
mercy, with cheerfulness.
Let love be genuine; hate what
is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another
with brotherly affection; outdo one another in
showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the
Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be
patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice
hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who
rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony
with one another; do not be haughty, but associate
with the lowly; never be conceited. Repay no one
evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in
the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends
upon you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never
avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God;
for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay,
says the Lord." No, "if your enemy is hungry, feed
him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so
doing you will heap burning coals upon his head." Do
not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with
good.

Gospel: John
7:37-end; 8:12-20
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus
stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him
come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the
scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow
rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the
Spirit, which those who believed in him were to
receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words,
some of the people said, "This is really the
prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But
some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has
not the scripture said that the Christ is descended
from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village
where David was?" So there was a division among the
people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him,
but no one laid hands on him.
The officers then went back to
the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them,
"Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered,
"No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees
answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have
any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed
in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are
accursed." Nicodemus, who had gone to him before,
and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law
judge a man without first giving him a hearing and
learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from
Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet
is to rise from Galilee." They went each to his own
house . . . . . .
Again Jesus spoke to them,
saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows
me will not walk in darkness, but will have the
light of life." The Pharisees then said to him, "You
are bearing witness to yourself; your testimony is
not true." Jesus answered, "Even if I do bear
witness to myself, my testimony is true, for I know
whence I have come and whither I am going, but you
do not know whence I come or whither I am going. You
judge according to the flesh, I judge no one. Yet
even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is
not I alone that judge, but I and he who sent me. In
your law it is written that the testimony of two men
is true; I bear witness to myself, and the Father
who sent me bears witness to me." They said to him
therefore, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered,
"You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me,
you would know my Father also." These words he spoke
in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no
one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

First Reading:
Genesis 19:1-7, 9-26
The two angels came to Sodom in the
evening; and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When
Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed himself
with his face to the earth, and said, "My lords, turn
aside, I pray you, to your servant's house and spend the
night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early
and go on your way." They said, "No; we will spend the
night in the street." But he urged them strongly; so
they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he
made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they
ate. But before they lay down, the men of the city, the
men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the
last man, surrounded the house; and they called to Lot,
"Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them
out to us, that we may know them." Lot went out of the
door to the men, shut the door after him, and said, "I
beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I
have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring
them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do
nothing to these men, for they have come under the
shelter of my roof." But they said, "Stand back!" And
they said, "This fellow came to sojourn, and he would
play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than
with them." Then they pressed hard against the man Lot,
and drew near to break the door. But the men put forth
their hands and brought Lot into the house to them, and
shut the door. And they struck with blindness the men
who were at the door of the house, both small and great,
so that they wearied themselves groping for the door.
Then the men said to Lot, "Have you any one else
here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any one you have
in the city, bring them out of the place; for we are
about to destroy this place, because the outcry against
its people has become great before the Lord, and the
Lord has sent us to destroy it." So Lot went out and
said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his
daughters, "Up, get out of this place; for the Lord is
about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his
sons-in-law to be jesting.
When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying,
"Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are
here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the
city." But he lingered; so the men seized him and his
wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being
merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him
outside the city. And when they had brought them forth,
they said, "Flee for your life; do not look back or stop
anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be
consumed." And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords;
behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and
you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but
I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake
me, and I die. Behold, yonder city is near enough to
flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is
it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!" He said
to him, "Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I
will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.
Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you
arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called
Zoar. The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to
Zoar.
Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah
brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; and he
overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the
inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a
pillar of salt.

Second Reading:
Joshua 21:43-22:9
Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land which he swore
to give to their fathers; and having taken possession of
it, they settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on
every side just as he had sworn to their fathers; not
one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the
Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. Not
one of all the good promises which the Lord had made to
the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.
Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, and the
Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and said to
them, "You have kept all that Moses the servant of the
Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that
I have commanded you; you have not forsaken your
brethren these many days, down to this day, but have
been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.
And now the Lord your God has given rest to your
brethren, as he promised them; therefore turn and go to
your home in the land where your possession lies, which
Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side
of the Jordan. Take good care to observe the commandment
and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord
commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in
all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave to him, and to serve him with all your heart and
with all your soul." So Joshua blessed them, and sent
them away; and they went to their homes.
Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses
had given a possession in Bashan; but to the other half
Joshua had given a possession beside their brethren in
the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them
away to their homes and blessed them, he said to them,
"Go back to your homes with much wealth, and with very
many cattle, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and
with much clothing; divide the spoil of your enemies
with your brethren." So the Reubenites and the Gadites
and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting
from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the
land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own
land of which they had possessed themselves by command
of the Lord through Moses.

Epistle: Romans
14:10-end
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do
you despise your brother? For we shall all stand before
the judgment seat of God; for it is written, "As I live,
says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every
tongue shall give praise to God." So each of us shall
give account of himself to God.
Then let us no more pass judgment on one another,
but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or
hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am
persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in
itself; but it is unclean for any one who thinks it
unclean. If your brother is being injured by what you
eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what
you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. So
do not let your good be spoken of as evil. For the
kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness
and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit; he who thus serves
Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. Let us
then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual
upbuilding. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the
work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong
for any one to make others fall by what he eats; it is
right not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that
makes your brother stumble. The faith that you have,
keep between yourself and God; happy is he who has no
reason to judge himself for what he approves. But he who
has doubts is condemned, if he eats, because he does not
act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith
is sin.

Gospel: John
9:39-10:21
Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that
those who do not see may see, and that those who see may
become blind." Some of the Pharisees near him heard
this, and they said to him, "Are we also blind?" Jesus
said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no
guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your guilt
remains.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the
sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that
man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the
door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper
opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own
sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought
out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep
follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they
will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they
do not know the voice of strangers." This figure Jesus
used with them, but they did not understand what he was
saying to them.
So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to
you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me
are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed
them. I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be
saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came
that they may have life, and have it abundantly. I am
the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life
for the sheep. He who is a hireling and not a shepherd,
whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and
leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them
and scatters them. He flees because he is a hireling and
cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I
know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me
and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the
sheep. And I have other sheep, that are not of this
fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my
voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd. For
this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my
life, that I may take it again. No one takes it from me,
but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay
it down, and I have power to take it again; this charge
I have received from my Father."
There was again a division among the Jews because of
these words. Many of them said, "He has a demon, and he
is mad; why listen to him?" Others said, "These are not
the sayings of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the
eyes of the blind?"

First Reading:
Genesis 49:1-12, 22-26
Then Jacob called his sons,
and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell
you what shall befall you in days to come. Assemble and
hear, O sons of Jacob, and hearken to Israel your
father.
Reuben, you are my first-born, my might, and the first
fruits of my strength, pre-eminent in pride and
pre-eminent in power. Unstable as water, you shall not
have pre-eminence because you went up to your father's
bed; then you defiled it -- you went up to my couch!
Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are
their swords. O my soul, come not into their council; O
my spirit, be not joined to their company; for in their
anger they slay men, and in their wantonness they
hamstring oxen. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in
Jacob and scatter them in Israel. Judah, your brothers
shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your
enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you.
Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have
gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a
lioness; who dares rouse him up? The scepter shall not
depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between
his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs; and to him
shall be the obedience of the peoples. Binding his foal
to the vine and his ass's colt to the choice vine, he
washes his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood
of grapes; his eyes shall be red with wine, and his
teeth white with milk. . . . . .
Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a
spring; his branches run over the wall. The archers
fiercely attacked him, shot at him, and harassed him
sorely; yet his bow remained unmoved, his arms were made
agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (by the
name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel), by the God of
your father who will help you, by God Almighty who will
bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of
the deep that couches beneath, blessings of the breasts
and of the womb. The blessings of your father are mighty
beyond the blessings of the eternal mountains, the
bounties of the everlasting hills; may they be on the
head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was separate
from his brothers.

Zechariah
3:7-4:6, 11-end; 7:9-10; 8:4-5, 12-19; 9:9-12
"Thus says the Lord of
hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge,
then you shall rule my house and have charge of my
courts, and I will give you the right of access among
those who are standing here. Hear now, O Joshua the high
priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for
they are men of good omen: behold, I will bring my
servant the Branch. For behold, upon the stone which I
have set before Joshua, upon a single stone with seven
facets, I will engrave its inscription, says the Lord of
hosts, and I will remove the guilt of this land in a
single day. In that day, says the Lord of hosts, every
one of you will invite his neighbor under his vine and
under his fig tree."
And the angel who talked with me came again, and waked
me, like a man that is wakened out of his sleep. And he
said to me, "What do you see?" I said, "I see, and
behold, a lamp stand all of gold, with a bowl on the top
of it, and seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of
the lamps which are on the top of it. And there are two
olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the
other on its left." And I said to the angel who talked
with me, "What are these, my lord?" Then the angel who
talked with me answered me, "Do you not know what these
are?" I said, "No, my lord." Then he said to me, "This
is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor
by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”. .
. . .
Then I said to him, "What are these two olive trees on
the right and the left of the lamp stand?" And a second
time I said to him, "What are these two branches of the
olive trees, which are beside the two golden pipes from
which the oil is poured out?" He said to me, "Do you not
know what these are?" I said, "No, my lord." Then he
said, "These are the two anointed who stand by the Lord
of the whole earth.". . . . . _
"Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments,
show kindness and mercy each to his brother, do not
oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the
poor; and let none of you devise evil against his
brother in your heart.". . . . . Thus says the Lord of
hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the
streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand for very
age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys
and girls playing in its streets. . . . .
“For there shall be a sowing of peace; the vine shall
yield its fruit, and the ground shall give its increase,
and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause
the remnant of this people to possess all these things.
And as you have been a byword of cursing among the
nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I
save you and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let
your hands be strong."
For thus says the Lord of hosts: "As I purposed to do
evil to you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, and
I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts, so again have
I purposed in these days to do good to Jerusalem and to
the house of Judah; fear not. These are the things that
you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in
your gates judgments that are true and make for peace,
do not devise evil in your hearts against one another,
and love no false oath, for all these things I hate,
says the Lord." And the word of the Lord of hosts came
to me, saying, "Thus says the Lord of hosts: The fast of
the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the
fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be
to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness, and
cheerful feasts; therefore love truth and peace. . . . .
.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O
daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on an
ass, on a colt the foal of an ass. I will cut off the
chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall
command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from
sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant
with you, I will set your captives free from the
waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of
hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Epistle: Romans
11:13-24
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am
an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry in
order to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some
of them. For if their rejection means the reconciliation
of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life
from the dead? If the dough offered as first fruits is
holy, so is the whole lump; and if the root is holy, so
are the branches.
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a
wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share
the richness of the olive tree, do not boast over the
branches. If you do boast, remember it is not you that
support the root, but the root that supports you. You
will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be
grafted in." That is true. They were broken off because
of their unbelief, but you stand fast only through
faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. For if
God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he
spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of
God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's
kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness;
otherwise you too will be cut off. And even the others,
if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be
grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in
again. For if you have been cut from what is by nature a
wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a
cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural
branches be grafted back into their own olive tree.

Gospel: Matthew 20:29-21:22
And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed
him. And behold, two blind men sitting by the roadside,
when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out,
"Have mercy on us, Son of David!" The crowd rebuked
them, telling them to be silent; but they cried out the
more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" And Jesus
stopped and called them, saying, "What do you want me to
do for you?" They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be
opened." And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and
immediately they received their sight and followed him.
And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to
Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two
disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village opposite
you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a
colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If any
one says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has
need of them,' and he will send them immediately." This
took place to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet,
saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is
coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, and on a
colt, the foal of an ass." The disciples went and did as
Jesus had directed them; they brought the ass and the
colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat
thereon. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the
road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread
them on the road. And the crowds that went before him
and that followed him shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of
David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!" And when he entered Jerusalem,
all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?" And the
crowds said, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of
Galilee."
And Jesus entered the temple of God and drove out all
who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the
tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who
sold pigeons. He said to them, "It is written, 'My house
shall be called a house of prayer'; but you make it a
den of robbers."
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple,
and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the
scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the
children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son
of David!" they were indignant; and they said to him,
"Do you hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to
them, "Yes; have you never read, 'Out of the mouth of
babes and sucklings thou hast brought perfect praise'?"
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and
lodged there. In the morning, as he was returning to the
city, he was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the
wayside he went to it, and found nothing on it but
leaves only. And he said to it, "May no fruit ever come
from you again!" And the fig tree withered at once. When
the disciples saw it they marveled, saying, "How did the
fig tree wither at once?" And Jesus answered them,
"Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and never doubt,
you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree,
but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and
cast into the sea,' it will be done. And whatever you
ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith."

Isaiah 60:1-7
Arise, shine; for your
light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon
you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and
thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon
you, and his glory will be seen upon you. And nations
shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of
your rising.
Lift up your eyes round about, and see; they all gather
together, they come to you; your sons shall come from
far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms.
Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall
thrill and rejoice; because the abundance of the sea
shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall
come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the
young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba
shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and
shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. All the flocks of
Kedar shall be gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth
shall minister to you; they shall come up with
acceptance on my altar, and I will glorify my glorious
house.

Samuel 2:1-10
Hannah also prayed and said, "My heart exults in the
Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord. My mouth
derides my enemies, because I rejoice in thy salvation.
"There is none holy like the Lord, there is none besides
thee; there is no rock like our God. Talk no more so
very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions
are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the
feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired
themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have
ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she
who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and
brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he
also exalts.
He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy
from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and
inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth
are the Lord'S, and on them he has set the world. "He
will guard the feet of his faithful ones; but the wicked
shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might shall a
man prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken
to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The
Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give
strength to his king, and exalt the power of his
anointed."

Epistle: Romans
5:20-6:all; Hebrews 13:20-21
Law came in, to increase
the trespass; but where sin increased, grace abounded
all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace
also might reign through righteousness to eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord. What shall we say then?
Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no
means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do
you not know that all of us who have been baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were
buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that
as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the
Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his,
we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection
like his. We know that our old self was crucified with
him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we
might no longer be enslaved to sin. For he who has died
is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we
believe that we shall also live with him. For we know
that Christ being raised from the dead will never die
again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death
he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he
lives he lives to God. So you also must consider
yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to
make you obey their passions. Do not yield your members
to sin as instruments of wickedness, but yield
yourselves to God as men who have been brought from
death to life, and your members to God as instruments of
righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you,
since you are not under law but under grace.
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law
but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if
you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you
are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin,
which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were
once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart
to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves
of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because
of your natural limitations. For just as you once
yielded your members to impurity and to greater and
greater iniquity, so now yield your members to
righteousness for sanctification.
When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to
righteousness. But then what return did you get from the
things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those
things is death. But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you
get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the
wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. . . . Now may the
God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord
Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of
the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good
that you may do his will, working in you that which is
pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be
glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel: John 20:1-18
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to
the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that
the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran,
and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one
whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the
Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have
laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple,
and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the
other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first;
and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying
there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came,
following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen
cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his
head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a
place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached
the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must
rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to
their homes.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept
she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two
angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had
lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to
her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them,
"Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know
where they have laid him." Saying this, she turned round
and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was
Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she
said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me
where you have laid him, and I will take him away."
Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in
Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to
her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the
Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am
ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and
your God." Mary Magdalene went and said to the
disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them
that he had said these things to her.

Isaiah 55:4-end
“Behold, I made him a
witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the
peoples. Behold, you shall call nations that you know
not, and nations that knew you not shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of
Israel, for he has glorified you.
"Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him
while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and
the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the
Lord, that he may have mercy on him, and to our God, for
he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my
ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your
thoughts.
"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and
return not thither but water the earth, making it bring
forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to
the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my
mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall
accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the
thing for which I sent it.
"For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth
into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap
their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the
cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an
everlasting sign which shall not be cut off."

Second Reading: Acts 4:32-5:5
Now the company of those who believed were of one heart
and soul, and no one said that any of the things which
he possessed was his own, but they had everything in
common. And with great power the apostles gave their
testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and
great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy
person among them, for as many as were possessors of
lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of
what was sold _and laid it at the apostles' feet; and
distribution was made to each as any had need. Thus
Joseph who was surnamed by the apostles Barnabas(which
means, Son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of
Cyprus, sold a field which belonged to him, and brought
the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.
But a man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira sold a
piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept
back some of the proceeds, and brought only a part and
laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, "Ananias,
why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy
Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the
land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your
own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal?
How is it that you have contrived this deed in your
heart? You have not lied to men but to God." When
Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And
great fear came upon all who heard of it.

Epistle: Colossians 1:1-20
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and
Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren
in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God
our Father.
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of
your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which you
have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for
you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word
of the truth, the gospel _which has come to you, as
indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing—so among yourselves, from the day you heard and
understood the grace of God in truth, as you learned it
from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a
faithful minister of Christ on our behalf _and has made
known to us your love in the Spirit.
And so, from the day we heard of it, we have not ceased
to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the
knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and
understanding, to lead a life worthy of the Lord, fully
pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and
increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be
strengthened with all power, according to his glorious
might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving
thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in
the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered
us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to
the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of
all creation; for in him all things were created, in
heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or principalities or
authorities—all things were created through him and for
him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold
together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is
the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in
everything he might be pre-eminent. For in him all the
fulness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to
reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in
heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Gospel: John 20:19-end
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week,
the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear
of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to
them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he
showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples
were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them
again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me,
even so I send you." And when he had said this, he
breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy
Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are
forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are
retained."
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not
with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told
him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them,
"Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and
place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my
hand in his side, I will not believe."
Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house,
and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus
came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with
you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and
see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my
side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas
answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him,
"Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are
those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did
many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which
are not written in this book; but these are written that
you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
